History
The Borg Collective created the transwarp hub at an unknown period in history in order to better deploy their vessels across the galaxy. At least six hubs were established which allowed for the deployment of Borg forces throughout the quadrants. In 2378, the USS Voyager discovered one of the hubs within the Delta Quadrant. High neutrino emissions and a graviton flux made the Starfleet crew believe it was a natural wormhole but revealed the Borg presence. They attempted to use the hub in an effort to return to the Alpha Quadrant and Earth.
This was accomplished by an alternate future version of Captain Kathryn Janeway who used a neurolytic pathogen to infect the Borg Queen which critically damaged the Collective in that region. The disruption caused the interspatial manifolds to degrade and the entire hub was destroyed as a result but not before a conduit allowed the USS Voyager to return home.
It is unknown if the other hubs are operational after the destruction of the Delta Quadrant branch.
Background
The transwarp hub was a massive Borg structure that circled a region of a huge star. They allowed for the immediate deployment of Borg forces throughout all the four quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy. This provides a level of strategic ability for the Collective which was capable of sendings its vessels at a moment's notice. Numerous transwarp conduits were present allowing for vessels to be sent into transwarp with interspatial manifolds being present to maintain the gateways. These were maintained by force fields which were controlled by a Borg Queen.
The destruction of the massive hub complex was possible by disabling enough interspatial manifolds but the problem was being capable of bypassing the protective forcefields. Once accomplished, multiple detonations would still be needed to destroy the hub and this would have to be done simultaneously in order to collapse the manifolds and force a cascade reaction to take out the neighbouring interspatial manifolds. Once this occured, a shockwave was produced that surged through any active transwarp conduits.
A command station was nearby which was administered by a Borg Queen who insured that the hub was protected at all costs.
