History
Trolls were a race of humanoid beings that were native to the Ten Realms that included Asgard. These noted enemies of the Asgardians resided within the underground Kingdom of the Trolls. (Thor v1 #137)
Centuries ago, Greyval Grimson and Balder The Brave ran afoul of a small but cunning band of rock trolls, who were on average about four feet tall. It is not known, however, whether these trolls where just smaller than others of their race, or all trolls of the age were smaller, or even if there is simply a wider variation in troll size than the current crop of Troll warriors would suggest. These trolls seemed to show a natural aptitude for casting illusions, which they often used to make their thorn-filled dens resemble grand banquet halls. They also possessed other simple forms of magic, such as the scrying Pool of Mirrors, the sedative Thorns of Sleep, and the fruit of the Trollvine, which could transform creatures who consumed it into trolls. (Marvel Graphic Novel v1 #15)
One day, an entity known as Orikal came upon the universe of Asgard where he was captured by the Trolls and enslaved by King Geirrodur. The being was imprisoned in a sea of flame where he was forced to use his mind and Infinite Eye in service to the Trolls. (Thor v1 #138)
After their repeated defeats at the hands of Thor, the Troll-King Geirrodur was met with by the warrior Ulik who proposed a cunning plan to eliminate the Asgardian. This involved an ambush to drag him into the Chamber of the Winds where Ulik intended to battle him in unarmed combat so that he would not use his hammer. During the battle, the Rock Trolls used a magnetised plate of Uru to draw Mjolnir to it and then absconded with the weapon where they threw it into the furnace in an effort to destroy it. Thor himself seemingly also perished as he broke away from the fight in order to recover Mjolnir and plunged into the flames to retrieve it. (Thor v1 #210)
The Flying Trolls of Thryheim later assisted Queen Ula in the war against Hela. (New Mutants v1 #84)
The Dark Elf Queen Alyfse gathered an army with the intention of conquering Midgard and began to enslave a number of Trolls. This saw their number of their kind in Nornheim resenting her actions and they decided to march against her. Hercules whilst disguised as Thor initially battled them and then joined them in battle only to be betrayed by their number. Despite their treachery, he managed to defeat them whereupon he went forth to meet the Dark Elf Queen. (Incredible Hercules v1 #134)
An army of the Flying Trolls of Thryheim working for Morgan Le Fay attacked Crystal, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch at Cafe Transia. (Avengers v3 #1)
A group of Murder Trolls were hired by Dormammu and tasked with killing his niece Clea. They came upon Valkyrie who defeated them whereupon Clea cast an enchantment on the Trolls making them believe they had completed their task where they were to return to their employer. (Fearless Defenders v1 #7)
The War of the Realms eventually reached Midgard with the Trolls joining the Dark Council in the invasion of Earth. (War of the Realms v1 #1) This saw them claiming the region of Australia as part of the Kingdom of the Trolls. (War of the Realms v1 #3) The Champions were present in Australia where they tried to help fight off the Rock Trolls. (Champions v3 #5)
In the aftermath, Asgard forged a peace with the Trolls by offering them a place in the Realm Eternal and thus they aided in the reconstruction efforts in rebuilding the shattered towers of the city. (Thor v5 #16)
