Twelve Demon Moons

The Twelve Demon Moons were a group that feature in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

History

The Twelve Demon Moons (じゅう二に 鬼き月づき Jūnikizuki?) were a group of demons that were formed and led by Muzan Kibutsuji.

The Demon Slayers later gathered in number at Natagumo Mountain (那な田た蜘ぐ 蛛も山やま Natagumo yama?) in order to slay the Spider family that resided there under Rui's control. Most of the slayers were killed with only a small band managing to put up a fight that killed several of the demons. Ultimately, Rui himself intervened and despite a near-death injury he overwhelmed his foe but was killed by the Hashira Giyu Tomioka. With his death, Kibutsuji came to be dissatisfied with the strength of the Lower Moons and believed he had no place for weaklings among his followers. Thus, he called a meeting of the Lower Moons and declared that he intended to kill them all as they served no purpose for him. Each of the demons either pleaded with Kibutsuji or attempted to flee thus leading to Muzan killing them. The only remaining Lower Moon demon was Enmu who declared that he would be honoured to have Muzan slay him. This response amused Kibutsuji who gave the demon some of his blood thus making him stronger. He then bade Enmu to slay a Hashira in order to prove his worth and continued survival with the demon then making his way to the Mugen train to find his target.

Following Rui's death, Kibutsuji forced a gathering of the Lower Moons as he came to be displeased at their performance. He believed that the demons of this rank had failed their intended purpose of becoming stronger and that none had managed to defeat one of the Hashira. Thus, he had been forced to replace their ranks numerous times over the years but Rui's death convinced him that there was no purpose in having them anymore. He questioned each of the Lower Moons if he had any need of them but each of their reactions displeased Muzan who brutally killed them. In the end, there was only Enmu left who simply showed joy at being killed by his master with this being a response that pleased Kibutsuji. Thus, he decided to give Enmu a chance and injected him with more of his blood thus making the Lower Moon much stronger. He was then dispatched to kill one of the Hashira with him faced with he prospect of a reward of more of Kibutsuji's blood if he succeeded in his task.

Overview

In appearance, the Kizuki were all demons who were originally human until they were transformed by the blood of Kibutsuji.

Upon joining their ranks, members were given a mark that was engraved on their eye.

It was divided into two groups that included the Upper Moons (上じょう弦げん Jōgen?) and the Lower Moons (下か弦げん Kagen?). Both groupings consisted of six members with the former being the strongest demons whilst the latter consisted of the weakest demons.

Earning their master's displeasure could see one of the members being stripped of their position within the Twelve Demon Moons.

According to their master, the purpose of the Lower Moons was to grow stronger and challenge their higher ranking members to replace them.

Members

• Muzan Kibutsuji (鬼舞辻 無惨, Kibutsuji Muzan) :
• Akaza (猗あ窩か座ざ Akaza?) : a male human born as Hakuji (狛はく治じ Hakuji?) who was turned into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji over a century ago. He was one of the Upper Moons where he held the position of Upper Rank Three (上じょう弦げんの参さん Jōgen no San?).
• Rui (累 Rui?) : a young male boy with white skin, hair and clothing with him being one of the Lower Moons whilst also being the head of the Spider Family. Originally, he was a young boy who was born with a weak body thus meaning that he could not leave his house. The distraught family were then visited by Kibutsuji who turned the boy into a demon after taking pity on him. Rui then began to eat humans with his family intending to kill him and themselves to be at peace. However, Rui killed his family and believed that they had betrayed him where he came to see them not being his real parents. Afterwards, he established himself in the Natagumo Mountain where he offered sanctuary to fleeing demons if they became his family where he altered their features to be his parents and siblings in an effort to find a real family bond. The Spider family preyed on anyone within the forest with Rui being the cruel leader of the group who callously killed anyone with his razor sharp web threads.
• Enmu ((魘えん夢む, Enmu?) : He was one of the Lower Moons who held the position of Lower Rank One (下か弦げんの壱いち Kagen no Ichi?).
• Kamanue (釜かま鵺ぬえ Kamanue?) : He was one of the Lower Moons who held the position of Lower Rank Six (下か弦げんの陸ろく Kagen no Roku?) after replacing Kyogai.
• Kyogai (響きょう凱がいKyōgai?) : an older male demon who had drums that could manipulate the environment. He was once a member of the Lower Moons where he was the former Lower Rank Six (下か弦げんの陸ろく Kagen no Roku?) until he was stripped of his rank.

• The Twelve Demon Moons were created by Koyoharu Gotōge where they featured in the setting of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
