History
Vampires were a race of demonic undead born from humans and who resided on Earth. Their origins were tied to untold eons ago when demons walked the world and made it their personal Hell. (Episode: The Harvest) A related but entirely different race were the Turok-Han who were akin to Neanderthals of the race. (Episode: Bring on the Night) In the time of Illyria, vampires were known to had exited and inhabited the Earth. (Episode: Shells) Eventually, the ancient demons lost their purchase on reality allowing for the rise of mortal animals including mankind. Before departing that plane, the last demon to leave fed off a human thus mixing their bloods with the human becoming infected by the demon's soul. Over time, the first vampire fed on others of their kind until the species was born where they walked on the Earth's surface. (Episode: The Harvest) During the age of the Old Ones, Vampires were known to had existed and were one of the many lower ranking beings to inhabit the world. (Episode: Shells)
Using his influence, Mayor Richard Wilkins hid all activities involving vampires from the public in order to keep the existence of the supernatural hidden from the public. (Episode: I Only Have Eyes for You)
Overview
To create a new vampire, blood exchange was needed. Victims of vampire attacks did not turn into new vampires unless they consumed the sire's blood when near death after being fed on by said vampire. If the vampire drained all of the victim's blood, the victim would simply die. (Episode: Welcome to the Hellmouth) A human who imbibed vampire blood when not at the point of death would not change. (Episode: Buffy vs. Dracula) Following the blood exchange, the victim died of blood loss and, according to Wesley, would reawaken on the night after the siring, sometime between sunset and sunrise. However, certain other vampires rose a few hours after the blood exchange. No special preparations, such as burial, were required for the vampire's rebirth; vampires mostly rose from graves because they spent a time between death and rebirth as corpses and were buried. Some vampires however, preferred to bury their progeny out of some form of tradition. (Episode: Reunion)
Their bodies performed motor functions like human bodies, often better than humans. Even if a person was sired at an old age, they would not be restricted by the same physical limitations as a human would. Anne Pratt went from a frail old woman to one with a healthy and glowing appearance. (Episode: Lies My Parents Told Me)
When a human was sired, their human soul left their body and a demon soul took possession of the corpse, reanimating it and altering its physiology. (Episode: The Harvest) They were regarded as a paradox in that they were a hybrid of a demon in a human body with this being both a natural as well as unnatural state. Vampires were said to walk in both the human and demon world yet belonged to neither. (Episode: Who Are You?)
A vampire's demon core had no personality of its own; ordinary vampires gained the qualities of the people they were in life, including memories, fears and desires. (Episode: Angel)
According to Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, this was what the demonic component of a vampire looked like. Wesley also theorized that such a demon could have been the one that created the first vampire. (Episode: Through the Looking Glass)
It was noted that electronic security systems were incapable of detecting a vampire. (Episode: The Shroud of Rahmon)

Particularly old and powerful vampires when killed had their bones remain which did not turn to dust. (Episode: Prophecy Girl)
Vampires largely preferred working alone, though were sometimes found living in groups organized like packs or prides. These groups were commonly organized with the purpose of protection and feeding. (Episode: Superstar)
Organizations and groups within vampire society included:
- Order of Aurelius :
- El Eliminati :
As a species, the nature of vampires meant that they were considered hybrids of humans and demons. (Episode: Who Are You?) This meant that they were looked down by more 'purer' demons. (Episode: Hero)
Within vampire society, the Slayer could be described as a source of great fear. Even vampires as powerful as Angelus and Darla preferred to avoid confronting Slayers, keeping a low profile to prevent attracting her attention. (Episode: Fool for Love)
