Biography

Origin

The Vanisher was the name of a human Mutant born in the modern age on Earth. (X-Men v1 #2) When his powers first manifested, he found himself teleporting away randomly with no control of his abilities. (Fallen Angels v1 #7) Whilst growing up, he was noted to had loved the television show Taxi. (X-Force v1 #70) By adulthood, he crafted his Vanisher identity and began using his powers to perform crimes where he would simply teleport away to escape capture. (X-Men v1 #2)

He embarked on a one-man crime wave of spectacular thefts using his power of self-teleportation. Thanks to his remarkable successes, the Vanisher quickly assembled a criminal organization under his leadership. In his greatest coup, the Vanisher stole top-secret American defense plans and demanded ten million dollars for their return. Confident that no one could capture him, the Vanisher showed up on the White House lawn accompanied by his men to claim the ransom money. Charles Xavier was present and used his psychic powers to give the Vanisher amnesia. Unaware of his own powers, the Vanisher was quite easily captured and the defense plans were safely returned to the government. (X-Men v1 #2)

Later on, the mysterious Mutant-Master recruited several mutants to join his cause, proposing that they first defeat the X-Men, and then drive the humans to war with each other. Once the Eastern and Western worlds were at war, their group of mutants would step in as the third factor to rule the world. Vanisher joined Factor Three alongside Blob, Mastermind, the Changeling, and Unus the Untouchable, under the leadership of the Mutant-Master. (X-Men v1 #37) Vanisher and Ogre ambushed young mutant Sonny Baredo. Ogre put a control helmet on him after Vanisher knocked him unconscious with his sleeping gas gun. (Thunderbolts v1 #55) Factor Three manipulated the Ogre into completing an assignment for them, but they were furious when he failed, and ordered him to await orders. (Thunderbolts v1 #33) Factor Three worked together to lure the X-Men into a trap then attacked them with robots. Vanisher and the others, keeping their captives Professor X and Banshee, put the X-Men on trial. The Vanisher was the first to confront the teens with their crimes, like erasing his memories, and Factor Three declared the X-Men were guilty, and they were sentenced to death. The X-Men managed to escape and prepared to fight back against Factor Three. (X-Men v1 #37) Marvel Girl and Cyclops confronted Vanisher and the Blob, with armed guards, just as Factor Three was ready to instigate world war. Vanisher ordered his men to open fire on the mutants, then he tried to hit them with his gas gun, but Angel upset the gun and turned it back on Vanisher, who grew briefly dizzy before teleporting away, leaving Blob behind. (X-Men v1 #38) As the X-Men attacked the Mutant-Master, Vanisher stood with Unus and Mastermind against them. Professor X freed himself and exposed the Mutant-Master as an enemy of all mutants, and the Mutant-Master responded by telling his robots to attack all mutants there. Baffled, Vanisher did his best to fight back against the robots until Banshee freed himself and attacked, exposing the Mutant-Master as an alien bent on conquering Earth. As the Mutant-Master died, the base self-destructed, and Vanisher teleported to safety. (X-Men v1 #39)

Vanisher was trapped in his half teleported state for months. The X-Men detected Vanisher's distress through Cerebro, and Nightcrawler tried to teleport Vanisher free. The two of them passed through several alternate dimensions, where they saw counterparts of themselves, then they found themselves stranded and separated in one dimension. As warrior women approached Vanisher, he realized his powers were still cancelled out by the Darkforce, and he failed at his attempts to create weapons out of the Darkforce energy. For the next few days, Vanisher was pampered and fed by the women, and he pocketed a few jewels. Nightcrawler found Vanisher and told him they needed each other's powers in order to make it back to Earth, but Vanisher grabbed a blade, not wanting to go back. After Nightcrawler easily defeated Vanisher, who tried running away and fighting back with the Darkforce, but he still couldn't control it. When a monster rushed at them, Vanisher finally willingly returned to Earth with Nightcrawler, but he appeared naked in front of Storm, Cyclops, Colossus, and Wolverine. Embarrassed, Vanisher disappeared. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

Wanting an easy life away from super heroes, Vanisher set a goal to create a safe home for teenagers who would then steal for him and give him a comfortable life. (Fallen Angels v1 #8) Vanisher recruited several teenage girls, including one named Boom-Boom who had mutant powers, offering them food and shelter if they stole for him and brought him the money. Boom-Boom returned with her stolen goods, but put a small time bomb in the satchel as she handed it to Vanisher. Avoiding the blast by teleporting, Vanisher scolded Boom-Boom, so she stormed away, leaving him behind. (X-Factor v1 #11) Vanisher followed Boom-Boom as she stole again, and he demanded his portion. Vanisher tried using threats and then charm to convince Boom-Boom to come back, but she had called X-Factor to come and pick him up. Vanisher hid but, after apologizing, Boom-Boom demanded he take her with him. When she refused to blow X-Factor up, Vanisher left her behind and teleported away. (X-Factor v1 #12)

Second Coming

As one of the few mutants who retained their powers after M-Day, Vanisher was hired to steal a large stockpile of the long-thought destroyed Legacy Virus. (X-Force v3 #7) Finding out about the stockpile, Cyclops ordered X-Force to recover it at all costs. X-Force managed to track Porter to a few of his safe-houses, attacking him individually as he teleported from one to another, eventually giving him a terminal brain tumor shaped like the X-Men logo to secure his co-operation in retrieving the Virus. He reluctantly gave up the location of the Virus, which had been taken by Marauders clones, transporting them to its last known location. (X-Force v3 #8) Whilst fighting off the Marauders clones, X-Force was attacked by a soldier of The Right, under command of the resurrected Cameron Hodge. During the battle, Wolverine ordered an evacuation, and Vanisher left them on their own. (X-Force v3 #10) He would later be found again, being gagged and forcibly inducted into the ranks of X-Force, as their main mode of transport and extraction. Porter reluctantly followed the team for some time participating in their battles and hoping at some point to have the brain tumor removed. (X-Force v3 #13)

House of X

Following the foundation of a mutant state in Krakoa by the hand of Charles Xavier and his allies, Vanisher resurfaced as a citizen of the nation, having been presumably reborn and repowered by the hand of The Five, a group of mutants capable of combining their powers into a process of resurrection, brought together by Xavier as part of his plans for mutant ascension. (House of X v1 #6)
