Biography
Aarkus
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Aarkus was an extradimensional humanoid male who possessed a highly striking, eerie, and supernatural physical palette characterized by distinct, solid green skin and a piercing, unblinking stare that bore a perpetually stoic expression. He stood at a standard adult male height with a lean, well-proportioned, and athletic alien build that showed no outward indicators of standard organic decay or physical vulnerabilities. His wardrobe consisted entirely of a specialized, skin-tight costume that lacked traditional civilian fabrics, featuring a form-fitting green bodysuit that wrapped seamlessly across his torso and limbs. This uniform was heavily defined by a massive, flowing dark green cape draped down his back, which was anchored at his neck by a highly unique, towering, and rounded ruby-red collar structure that partially framed his bald head. When actively manifesting his capabilities, his physical form would fluidly dematerialize and blend completely into nearby trails of ambient vapor, allowing him to waft into crime scenes and emerge directly out of localized smoke before onlookers. (Marvel Mystery Comics v1 #13)
Powers and abilities
Aarkus was born a native immortal inhabitant of the parallel Smoke World dimension, which natively meant his underlying anatomy was entirely free of terrestrial human genetic lineages, blood tracking, and common mortal biological constraints like illnesses or aging. He was a highly exceptional entity who served as his realm's Keeper of Law, granting him vast cosmic attributes far exceeding standard human physical limitations. His primary active capability was complete gas, vapor, and smoke manipulation, allowing him to fluidly dematerialize his corporeal mass into smoke to float through the air, achieve high-speed flight, and teleport instantaneously across vast distances or between reality vectors wherever smoke was present. Aarkus possessed a high tier of physical durability that rendered him virtually indestructible against standard kinetic physical impacts, alongside a unique cryokinetic touch that enabled him to freeze criminals completely solid in their tracks with a wave of his hand. Additionally, his exceptional physiology granted him advanced telepathic capabilities, allowing him to project detailed psychological illusions directly into the minds of his enemies to shatter their composure mid-battle. While his otherworldly traits made him an unmatched frontline asset against organized crime, his physiology introduced specific operational constraints: he was completely dependent on smoke or mist sources to anchor his presence and fuel his materialization, rendering him significantly weakened in entirely sterile, vacuum, or smoke-free environments. (Marvel Mystery Comics v1 #13)
The amount of smoke he needs to travel to a location it's directly proportional to its distance, meaning that to reach a far away planet like Hala he needs large quantities of smoke. (All-New Invaders v1 #3)
Aarkus once showed the ability to take the shape of a dog. (All-New Invaders v1 #3)
Notes
- The original Vision was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby where he made his first appearance in Marvel Mystery Comics v1 #13 (November, 1940).
- In Back Issue v1 #45 (2010), it was said that in the late 1960s, Avengers writer Roy Thomas wanted to have Aarkus join the Avengers. Thomas' editor Stan Lee insisted that the team's new member should be an android instead, for which Thomas created the Vision, who shared his name with Aarkus and sported a similar appearance and mysterious nature to his desired choice.
Alternate Versions
- In Universe X: 4 v1 #1 (2000), an alternate version of Aarkus appeared in the Earth-X reality that was designated as Earth-9997 in the Multiverse. Since his death he has remained in the Realm of the Dead, fighting pointless battles against the resident super-beings that have also died.
