History

The Wise Man (Japanese: 魔王ワイズマン, Hepburn: Maō (Waizuman)?, lit. "Satan") was a position given to the most skilled mage in the world who were selected from the ranks of students at the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. Participants were selected from the contestants in the Walpurgis Night Festival which was limited to the top 100 students in the academy.

Twenty years ago, a student of Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart named Bronson won the Night Party here he became the Wise Man. He retained the title until he was defeated by his successor whereupon he established his own company Divine Works (D-Works).

Raishin Akabane a Puppeteer from Japan travelled to the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart in London with his Automaton Yaya as part of his quest to become the next Wise Man. He was supported by the Empire of Japan who primarily used him as a military spy to learn advanced Machinarts that could be brought back to the country. As such, Raishin was enrolled at a prestigious academy where he had to navigate the politics and schemes of society to achieve his goal.

Overview

In appearance, the Wise Man was a position awarded by the Mage's Association and given to those that won the Night Party. Those that achieved this position were said to gain power, knowledge, fame, wealth and influence. The Wise Man received certain exemptions such as forbidden arts or books being available to them and giving them military benefits. This was to such an extent that such individuals could become generals of any nation's army. Attaining the rank of Wise Man was said to confer ultimate power to the wielder.

Bearers of the mantle were exempted from the International Charter on Magic Arts and the Code of Ethics that was the law all mages must follow, allowing one to read prohibited books, use forbidden arts, and or even perform research on immortality or genetic modification. Though not bound by the Mage Code of Ethics, they were still subject to the law and thus any experimentation on humans required the consent of the subject.

The position was the aspiration of many mages who often contended with one another for the right to become the Wiseman. Entry was made upon winning the Night Party which was a series of battles wherein Machinart clashed until there was only one left standing.
