History

On Midgard in Fear Itself: Deadpool v1 #1.

The Worthy were a group of warriors who came to serve the Serpent. (Fear Itself v1 #2)

Following the death of King Bor, the monarch's eldest son Cul took the throne with the Worthy being his loyal followers. Under Cul's reign, he encouraged fear among the populace with creatures such as Sleipner being used to bring about such states. In the aftermath, he would dispatch the Worthy to still the panic created among the population as a form of sport for them. (Mighty Thor v1 #7) Supporting these champions were the footsoldiers of the Serpent who were normal warriors known as the Draumar. (New Mutants v3 #31)

By his adulthood, Odin, Vi and Villi attacked their brother Cul at his fortress on the world of Asheim in order to stop his tyranny. For forty days, they were slaughtering Cul's forces with the Worthy sent to confront them. However, Odin had arrived at his fortress with Cul growing fearful at his brothers actions. Knowing that Odin could not kill him, Cul decided to prepare the Worthy for the future and used his magic to place their essence within their weapons. He dispatched these weapons into the void where he ensured that they would return in the future. (Mighty Thor v1 #7) In the battle, the Draumar were slaughtered by Odin with them being locked away in Hel and their rage transformed the once normal warriors into monsters. (New Mutants v3 #31)

Further hammers then went forth to lay claim to wielders of their power. This saw the Juggernaut, Hulk, Titania and Attuma claiming the weapons. As a result, Kuurth, Nul, Skirn and Nerkkod walked the Earth once more where they heeded the call of their master who was freed from his imprisonment. (Fear Itself v1 #2)

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., Skadi along with her forces battled the U.S. Army that arrived to oppose them. Captain America led a team of heroes to oppose her where Skadi engaged him in one-to-one battle. At the same time, the Kuurth: Breaker of Stone went on a rampage destroying several trains in Missouri. In Dubai, Greithoth: Breaker of Wills struck at the First International Credit Union of Dubai. Over in Brazil, Nul: Breaker of Worlds went into a rage threatening numerous civilians with the Red She-Hulk looking to save the innocents. However, she was attacked by Nul who hesitated as she changed to her human guise and begged Bruce to stop. Despite that, he was prepared to kill her but the Avengers arrived at the scene to engage him. One of the hammers came to fall on Yancy Street where the Fantastic Four went to investigate. In that moment, Ben Grimm touched the hammer causing his possession and transformation into Greithoth: Breaker of Wills. He then went on a rampage devastating the street as he attacked the other members of the Fantastic Four. Later on, Skadi's fight against Captain America saw her overwhelm her foe where she ripped off Bucky Barnes cybernetic arm and seemingly fatally injured him as a warning to the heroes of the world. (Fear Itself v1 #3)

Overview

In appearance, the Worthy were seven superhuman beings from the Asgardian realms. Their power stemmed from the hammers they wielded as they possessed whoever came to wield them. Thus, they turned into monstrous beings that were said to be fear given flesh. (Fear Itself v1 #3)

Cul considered the Worthy to be his children. (Mighty Thor v1 #7) They were held as the Serpent's avatars who carried with them weapons more mighty than any found among the mortals of Earth. (Fear Itself v1 #4) These champions were aided by the Draumar that served as the Huscarl Company. (New Mutants v3 #31)

The Worthy were driven by dire purposes that others could not fathom beyond the most simple which was to spread fear and terror. (Fear Itself v1 #4)
