Biography
Yuriko Watanabe was a female human born in the modern age where she was the daughter of John Watanabe. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)
As a child, she attended her grandfather Kenneth Watanabe's award ceremony for his service as a Sergeant in the NYPD with her stating that she was proud of him. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)
When she was an adult, her father was convicted for a bribery leading to his disgrace. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)
As a Lieutenant, she and DeWolff often worked on cases together under Captain George Stacy with one of these being work done against the Lucky Lobo gang. She and Jean were called to assist Captain Stacy as he went to meet an informant at Pappas Imports. The incident led to gunfire with the informant seemingly turning on George who was shot in the leg with the shooter being killed in the process. Both Yuri and Jean came to help George where they took him to the hospital. (Gwen Stacy v1 #1)
Following the incident with Massacre, Watanabe believed she needed to do something to stem the tide of violence that had come to the city. Thus, she decided to become a masked vigilante where she took the name of the Wraith where she made criminals believe that this was the Ghost of Jean DeWolff having risen from the grave to take revenge. Shortly thereafter, as the new vigilante called the Wraith she started targeting Mister Negative's criminal syndicate. During one such attack, the Wraith unmasked to reveal DeWolff's face, though in reality this was one of the Chameleon's masks stolen from police evidence. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #663) Yuri was simply pretending to be DeWolff's ghost in order to scare the criminals of New York, using a costume in imitation of Spider-Man to achieve the results she sought. When her activities became notorious, her subaltern Carlie Cooper started to investigate and managed to discover Wraith's real identity as Yuriko. After helping Spider-Man and Anti-Venom defeat Mister Negative, revealing him as the philanthropist Martin Li, Cooper convinced Yuriko to temporarily give up her career as a vigilante, also giving her advice on how to cover her tracks better. Yuriko took a leave of absence from her police duties and left New York for a while. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)
Wraith later accompanied forensic expert Carlie Cooper on a visit to Grand TaurĂ³, where they pursue underworld financier Antoine Morant, searching for information on the secret bank account of the Superior Spider-Man. Carlie and the Wraith catch up with Morant shredding some documents out of fear. Carlie recovers one of the documents, discovering that all of the Superior Spider-Man's equipment and technology for the Arachnauts, as well as the order for Spiderlings, are being paid for using the secret account, putting Carlie one step closer to finding the evidence needed to prove the new Spider-Man's true identity. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #19) After Carlie is kidnapped by the original Goblin King, Yuri investigates Octavius hoping to find Carlie's whereabouts. She confronts Octavius during the Goblin Nation's attack for info on Carlie but is knocked out by the transformed Carlie. She then aids the Avengers and their ally Cardiac against the Goblin Knight with assistance from Peter Parker who eventually regains his place as Spider-Man from Octavius. She came to admire the work of vigilantes in gaining justice for people murdered such as Spider-Man had done for Jean DeWolff. Upon becoming a vigilante herself, she sought to use fear as a means of scaring criminals and preventing further crime. - In Spider-Man, Yuri Watanabe appeared in the 2017 animated television series where she was voiced by actress Sumalee Montano. Police Chief Yuri Watanabe's claim of Spider-Man robbing a bank lead to him encountering Chameleon. While being held in a Supervillain Holding Facility, Spider-Man worked with Chief Watanabe to defeat Beetle and Electro.
Films
- In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Yuri Watanabe appeared in the setting of the animated film where she was voiced by actress Atsuko Okatsuka. This version was from Earth-65B where she was a police officer and partner of Captain George Stacy who led a hunt for Spider-Woman. They responded to a situation in the Guggenheim Museum where who they assumed to be the Vulture was on a rampage. Spider-Woman showed up and webbed both of them to their car before going in on her own. Captain Stacy eventually freed himself and led a group of his fellow cops inside as well.

- In Spider-Man, Yuri Watanabe appeared in the 2018 video game where she was voiced by English actor Tara Platt and by Japanese actress Ayumi Tsunematsu. Yuri was born on Astoria, New York City. Coming from a family of police officers, Yuri always believed on justice, aspiring to be an officer just like her grandfather and her father John Watanabe afterwards. When she was young, her father was convicted to be accepting bribes from the Maggia, but was killed before he could be arrested. This made Yuri swear to end the Maggia once and for all, joining the police to seek justice. On her early years as officer, Yuri started out as a detective in the Chinatown branch of the NYPD, but changed precincts several times during her time in the force. Over the course of a decade, Yuri begun to hunt down and disrupt many of the Maggia's operations by herself, being quickly promoted to captain for her deeds. As of 2018, it's said that Yuri was the responsible to end most of the Maggia's business in the city. This attracted the attention of the infamous Maggia leader Hammerhead, who became obsessed on finding and kill Watanabe. When the masked vigilante Spider-Man became notorious on the city, Yuri was one of the few authorities to really trust him, giving him her contact. They have been working together ever since, with Spider-Man helping Yuri on many cases.
