Biography
Michael Arthur Long was a male human who was born in the modern age on Earth.
In 1969, at the age of 20, Long joined the Army, was part of the Green Berets, and spent three years in counter-intelligence work in Vietnam. Captured once when snooping around, he fought his way out of a POW camp, incurring an injury which required brain surgery, and a metal plate that was inserted into his skull.
An Army intelligence veteran of the Vietnam War, Long worked as a police detective. In the midst of a case, he was double-crossed, led out into the desert, shot in the face and left for dead.
Michael came to be betrayed by an informant and shot in the head by industrial espionage expert Tanya Walker. His metal plate deflected the round, but Michael suffered serious facial damage. Michael was declared dead to the public, with his medical care taken over by the Foundation for Law And Government (FLAG), a private crime-fighting arm of Knight Industries, an organization founded by Wilton Knight, a dying billionaire philanthropist. Michael was not Wilton's first choice for the pilot program, but changed his mind and reopened the foundation due to Michael's arrival. Wilton picks up Michael, passed out in front of his car, on a desert highway. Michael was given a new face via facial reconstructive surgery, fingerprints, and life where he was renamed Michael Knight. Together with the high-tech automobile KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), Michael carried on Wilton's crusade of aiding the powerless. He was given mission objectives by the new director of FLAG, Wilton's longtime friend and confidant, Devon Miles. Michael was selected for his high level of self-defense training, intelligence, law enforcement experience, and his ability and preference to work alone without assistance or back-up.
After Wilton dies, Michael demands that Devon Miles give him his car and let him go to find the people that had set him up and attempted to murder him. Devon insists that Michael take KITT with him as Wilton had requested. Michael left with KITT and captured the people who had tried to murder him. And so began the journey of a man who does not exist.
In 1984, Michael finds out that there was a hit put out on Michael Long by Tayna's lover Cameron Zachary, which was why Michael was shot.
Michael retired from FLAG in 1990 with Team Knight Rider taking over his duties.
