Argo City

Argo City is a settlement that features in DC Comics.

History

Origin

Centuries ago on Krypton, the people of Argo City decided to institute a scientific government with it being ruled by a master computer. Once the machine was activated, it stated that it required aids to assist it and had the Kryptonian populace construct 100 metallic robots that were each 8 feet tall. Once its Machine Police were constructed, the master computer rebelled against the people of Argo City and attempted to impose its rule over them. Thus, it became known as the Machine-King but both it and its Machine Police were destroyed by the inhabitants of Argo City but not before many men died in the battle. The defeated master computers frame was kept as a monument of the mistake the people of Argo City had made and as a lesson of not repeating it. In time, the Machine-King's body came to reside in the Bottle City of Kandor. (Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen v1 #69)

The New 52

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events.

Whilst in space, a danger emerged on Argo City when Lar-On was exposed to Red Kryptonite that led to his transformation into an uncontrollable werewolf-like creature during moonlight. Zor-El and the Science Council were forced to banish Lar-On to the Phantom Zone rather than risk continued harm to the city along with its inhabitants. (Supergirl: Rebirth v1 #1)

The Cyborg Superan brought the remains of Argo City into the orbit of Saturn as he offered his daughter Kara Zor-El the chance to restore the city along with its inhabitants. He had actually reanimated the dead bodies with technology but they lacked the spark of life which Zor-El intended to harvest from the people of Earth bringing him into conflict with his daughter Supergirl. Inhabitants

• Lar-On : an inhabitant of Argo City who turned into a werewolf-like creature after exposure to Red Kryptonite that saw him being banished into the Phantom Zone by Zor-El following the city's surviving Krypton's destruction. (Supergirl: Rebirth v1 #1)

Notes

• Argo City was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino where it made its first appearance in Action Comics v1 #252 (May, 1959).

In other media

Television

• In Superman: The Animated Series, Argo was not a city but rather the name of the sister planet of Krypton with it being mentioned in "Last Son of Krypton" but fully seen in "Little Girl Lost". It was shown that once Krypton exploded that Argo was knocked out of orbit causing the death of its populace though a single survivor was found in Supergirl who was kept cryogenically fozen.
• In Supergirl, Argo City was referenced in the live-action series in the episode "Myriad". It was said that Astra and Non had attempted to take over Krypton with the mind controlling Myriad where they started their plan on Argo City until they were captured. For their crimes, they were sentenced to Fort Rozz by Allura In-Ze.

Films

• In the 1984 Supergirl film, Argo City was part of the setting that was the home of Kara Zor-El and her family along with other Kryptonians. It as shown to had survived in a pocket of extradimensional space with life-support provided by a device known as the Omegahedron. Zaltar would show the young Kara Zor-El the Omegahedron but it would become lost on Earth forcing her to go to the planet to recover it to save Argo City from destruction as it was deprived of this power source.
