Carlie joined the party at the King Class Club where Lily was attempting to gather support and finances to convince her father to run for mayor. Peter Parker attended where despite having little money pledged some support and wrote his name down. Upon getting the list, Carlie crossed his name out as she knew that he was struggling financially and wanted to help him out. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #552)
She began to investigate and managed to learn that her police Captain Yuri Watanabe was in fact the mysterious vigilante known as the Wraith. After the exposure of Mister Negative, Carlie confronted Watanabe but decided not to reveal her identity and instead helped her keep her secret identity as she felt Yuri was a good person. When she confessed this to Peter, he told her that he was the designer of Spider-Man's various equipment. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)
Carlie became one of a number of people that gained spider-related superpowers. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #666) She told her boyfriend Peter Parker about them and revelled in the use of her abilities with her seeing herself as potentially becoming Spider-Man's sidekick. After dropping Aunt May and Jay Jameson at the airport, they headed back to their apartment when they received on the news a report of an epidemic of people that had the powers of Spider-Man. These included a gang of criminals that put on variations of Spider-Man's costume to create havoc. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #667) Cooper used her abilities to help in apprehending criminals and was delighted when she believed that her boyfriend Peter Parker seemingly also developed Spider-Man powers. She requested that Parker be stationed at police headquarters to tailor captured supervillain equipment for use in the anti-Spider patrols gear based on Peter stating that he was responsible for creating Spider-Man's arsenal. During this time, she also deduced that the person responsible for the spider epidemic was the Jackal. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #668) The pair together were ambushed by a team of spider-enhanced supervillains that were guarding one of the Jackal's old lairs that attacked Cooper and Parker. After defeating them, Carlie took them into custody and asked Peter to bring Spider-Man so that the could work together. Whilst at the precinct, she was informed Spider-Man had arrived who claimed that Parker had just left with Carlie suspecting that the two were actually the same person. Before she could push the issue, Spider-Man and Cooper rushed to an incident with the anti-spider patrol who were engaged fighting the Shocker. After a brief fight, they learnt that the Shocker was stealing money to pay the Mad Thinker to cure him as the spider-virus was mutating him into a spider monster. At that point, Carlie went through a transformation turning her into a more spider-based creature as the disease had now mutated. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #669) She became one of the many spider monsters who served the Spider Queen in the attempted take over of the world until everyone was cured and the Queen was killed. Carlie was one of the many people returned back to normal with her returning back to her shared apartment to get clothes as hers were torn from the transformation. However, by this point, she deduced that her boyfriend Peter was actually Spider-Man as she put together all the clues she had seen in the past. Cooper felt betrayed by Parker especially as she had a dim view of secrets after numerous people in her life had lied to her. When Peter arrived, she confronted him about it and he eventually admitted that he was indeed Spider-Man. This led to Carlie deciding to end their relationship and had packed her bags with her leaving the apartment. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #673)
Afterwards, she was investigating a string of deaths among young people that were found dead on the ground. Her superior believed these to be kids attempting to get the same thrill they had during the Spider-Island incident though Officer Cooper disagreed based on the evidence on the scene. This caused police chief Prachett to be angry at being challenged and he banned her from investigating the case. However, Carlie was still determined to finding out the circumstances of the deaths but was unable to approach crime scenes now. Whilst at the Coffee Bean, she bumped into Peter Parker who was also looking to stop the deaths as Spider-Man. Despite breaking up, the pair decided to come to a truce and work together at finding out the culprits. The pair went to the morgue to examine the bodies where Cooper determined magnetic traces and tattoos indicating membership at a nightclub. Spider-Man deduced that the kids were working for the Vulture due to the presence of magnetic fields on the body and falling from heights. The pair then learnt that he operating from a nightclub on a rooftop called The Wake. Spider-Man then left Carlie in order to confront the villain as he did not want Cooper to be involved in a supervillain fight much to her frustration. Despite that, she made her way to the scene and observed the fight with the Vulture's minions to learn that their flight abilities were given by a constant signal from him. Carlie then told Spider-Man to use his magnetic webs to block the signals thus grounding all the Vulture's flock. The Vulture himself then threw a water tower at Carlie with Spider-Man saving her life though Toomes managed to escape. After witnessing the fight, Carlie came to say that she trusted Spider-Man even if she felt hurt by the lies Peter Parker had told her. Carlie then went to Mary Jane Watson's place as she learnt that she was aware of Peter Parker's secret with Cooper wanting to talk to her about it. The pair had coffee as M.J. told Carlie about her life with Peter Parker. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #675)
She was then called to Horizon Labs where she was surprised to find Morbius not apprehended but Spider-Man revealed to her that it was because he had helped in the capture of the Lizard. At that point, Michael was overwhelmed by his hunger causing him to feed Sajani Jaffrey and leading to Morbius fleeing from the laboratory with Spider-Man in pursuit. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #689) Carlie stayed at Horizon Labs where she tried to keep an eye out for him and noticed that he was acting strangely when he turned on the staff after revealing that he had transformed several of the scientists into lizard-like creatures in an attempt to turn back into the Lizard.
