After the Tormock war, the Thanagarians were in the process of rebuilding their world when the Sineater Onimar Synn emerged where he slaughtered the ruling high council and enslaved the people of Thanagar. He came to turn the dead into his dreaded Dark Wingmen servants to enforce his rule as he sought to consume everyone on the planet before directing his hunger to other worlds. Rebirth
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. For years, Synn had attempted to destroy the Thanagarian Empire but ultimately decided to take it over and ruled the throne. The subjects of the empire came to consider him their leader and he resided in the cosmically hidden world of Thanagar Prime. Onimar had consumed all Nth Metal that was part of his being and also formed an alliance with Starro the Star Conqueror. Around this time, he had learnt of the threat posed to all existence by Barbatos. Initially, he considered destroying Earth to prevent the end of all reality but instead had the Phoenix Cannon constructed with it being designed to pull Earth from the depths of the Dark Multiverse to save all creation. (Dark Knights: Metal v1 #4)
By this point, Synn was dying with no souls capable of sustaining him but he sought the mysterious metal within Firebrand's Conflict Engine and dispatched the Bad Samaritan to acquire it for him. The figure died in the attempt but created a new form of metal that had the potential of sustaining Onimar who became desperate to acquire it. (The Unexpected v1 #1)
