Tartaros is a group that features in Fairy Tail.

History

Tartaros (Japanese: 冥府の門タルタロス, Hepburn: Tarutarosu) was a dark guild that was formed in Earthland where they became a central part of the Balum Alliance alongside the Oracion Seis and Grimoire Heart. It was founded by the Etherious Mard Geer Tartaros who was created by Zeref Dragneel and consisted of similar such demons that were born from the Books of Zeref. Their formation came when Mard had located the tome of E.N.D. in a span of four hundred years with it being found by chance and Geer named the creature the Master of the Dark Guild. However, E.N.D. was believed to had been trapped in his book through powerful magic and Mard Greer long sought a means of opening it. He came to realise the true intention of their kind which was to kill their master as that was his only wish in the world and the only being seemingly capable of this act was E.N.D. As a guild of such creatures, they considered themselves not just followers of Zeref but his children whilst he regarded them as his bookshelf. It was said that the members of Tartaros made a contract with the Underworld King Mard Geer in order to make themselves an immortal guild. After the imprisonment of the Oracion Seis, Tartaros began cementing itself as the sole leader of the Balam Alliance and began attacking their lesser allies where they absorbed some of their number and destroyed the remaining. Eventually, they came to learn of the existence of an anti-magic weapon created by the Magic Council and sought to commandeer it in an attempt to wipe magic from the world. Mard Greer believed that such an act would break the seals holding E.N.D. and awaken the demon inside.

The dark guild sought to devastate the continent on behalf of their master and sought to use Face to accomplish this task. This was a weapon created by the Magic Council that could eliminate magic but was kept hidden away through body-link magic with former council members. As Tartaros consisted of demons, they did not make use of magic but rather curses thus making them immune to the power of Face. Thus, they staged their plan to eliminating magic from the continent and with the aid of the traitorous former councilman Crawford Seam they began their assault. This was initiated by them striking at the Magic Council and killing its members whereupon they began targeting former councilmen with information provided by Seam. Suddenly, a messenger runs in and reveals the presence of an imminent threat; an explosion takes place and destroys the building. Doranbolt looks nearby, only to find Lahar and the council members lying lifeless. Searching around, Doranbolt finds Org but before he can get to him, another person gets to him first and pins him down. Revealing himself as Jackal of the Nine Demon Gates, the Demon prepares to kill Org with an explosion. As he is about to die, Org tells Doranbolt to escape, which he reluctantly does just as the elderly council member dies in an explosion. At the same time, Kyôka meets with Silver and the rest of Nine Demon Gates barring Jackal and Tempester. Going forth, the seven members of the Nine Demon Gates prepare to bring despair upon humanity, while back in his cell, Cobra reveals to Doranbolt that all the members of Tartaros are Demons from the Books of Zeref and that their master is E.N.D., the most powerful of Zeref's creations. During their meeting, each of the Nine Demon Gates express their opinions on their current work, noting it is for Zeref that they intend to eliminate mankind.

Tempester one of the Nine Demon Gates was then dispatched to attack Laxus Dreyar who was ultimately able to overpower and defeat him. Forced into a corner, Tempester sacrifices one of his lives and unleashes Magical Barrier Particles, particles which create Magic deficiency, illness and can spread quickly. As Yajima, Evergreen and Bickslow collapse from this powerful poison, Laxus begins inhaling the particles, able to do so due to his Dragon Slayer lungs. While Tempester regenerates at headquarters, Kyôka monitors the captured Minerva's transformation into a Demon and fellow Demon Gate Franmalth puts high hopes on her in place of the failed Doriate, all at Tartaros headquarters, Natsu is throwing a violent tantrum, wishing to wage war against the Dark Guild, but without any clear direction of where to start. As it so happens, Natsu, Lucy, Wendy Happy and Carla are sent to guard Michello, who is less than enthusiastic about having the Fairy Tail members guard him, regardless of the situation. His granddaughter, Michelia talks him into calming down and he ponders reasons as to why Tartaros would be targeting them, however just as he thinks of a possible reason, Natsu smells something and pushes everyone down, just before an explosion destroys Michello's home. Fortunately, Natsu's manages to consume most of the explosion before it could cause any casualties. Just then, Jackal appears above them, curious as to why no one is dead.

Overview

In appearance, Tartaros was a dark guild of magic users. Their ranks consisted of Etherious who held a number of rules namely that they were demons from the Books of Zeref and therefore his children. Furthermore, they held a low opinion of humans as being vile and disgusting creatures. As such, all members of Tartaros were referred to as no longer being human but rather a guild of demons. They did not make use of magic but rather curses which they considered superior to ordinary magic. As such, anti-magic abilities were noted to not being able to affect them. The guild was not above killing their allies if they served their purpose. The ultimate goal of the guild was to return to their creator Zeref and thus sought to achieve this by any means. Unknown to these demons, the true reason for this desire to re-unite with Zeref was actually encoded within their genetics by their creator. He had tired of his immortal existence and sought an end to that life which he could not take himself. Thus, he created the Etherious demons who he intended to kill him but none of their number knew of this goal except for their leader Mard Greer who sought its completion.

A core team within the guild consisted of the Nine Demon Gates (九鬼門 Kyūkimon) who were the most powerful warriors of Tartaros. If any were killed, then a vacancy was left open among the Demon Gates ranks that could be filled by a new member.

Their base of operations was a floating island called the Cube (冥界島キューブ Kyūbu) that was cube-shaped and served as a home to the demons. Within their headquarters, the lower chambers contained a laboratory that had rows of tanks holding a mysterious liquid. This room was known as Hell's Core (ヘルズ・コア Heruzu Koa) that contained mechanisms controlled by demonic tentacle-like extensions. It was used by the dark guild to transform those worthy into Etherious demons granting select people with greater powers and abilities. These tanks were also used to regenerate the bodies of guild members that had their bodies destroyed. This could see them even changing their features allowing them to effectively transform their more monstrous forms into more human ones. With it, the members of Tartaros were effectively immortal as every time their bodies were destroyed they would manifest in one of the tanks in the room awaiting to be restored.

• Mard Geer Tartaros : a dark haired male Etherious who was the founder of Tartaros and was known as the Underworld King with him wielding Thorn Curses alongside other magic.
• Jiemma : a male human who was the former guildmaster of Sabretooth until he was deposed and he fled with his daughter Minerva where he went to Tartaros who transformed him into one of its members.
• Absolute Zero : a male human who was originally Silver Fullbuster until he was killed by the demon Deliora's attack but his corpse was found by the necromancer Keyes who experimented on the body. He came to revive Silver to life where he developed Ice Devil Slayer magic and sought to kill demons where he joined the ranks of Tartaros as one of the Nine Demon Gates.
• Kyôka : the green haired female Etherious who wielded enhancement magic that increased the senses felt by others with her being one of the Nine Demon Gates.
• Tempester : a male Etherious demon who wielded calamity curse magic and was one of the Nine Demon Gates.
• Jackal : a blonde haired Etherious demon who wielded Bomb curse magic and was one of the Nine Demon Gates.
• Keyes : a male skeletal Etherious demon who wielded necromancy and was known as the Black Archbishop (漆黒僧正 Shikkoku Sōjō).
