Rize Kamishiro is a female anime and manga character who features in Tokyo Ghoul.

Rize Kamishiro (Japanese: 神代 利世, Hepburn: Kamishiro Rize) was a female Ghoul born as one of the many illegitimate children of Tsuneyoshi Washuu. She was born at the Sunlit Garden where she was intended to be a 'womb' as part of the family's attempts at preserving the Washuu Clan bloodline. However, she was disregarded by her family with the young Rize being disgusted at her fate. This led to her being involved in an escape attempt where she was helped by Souta Washuu-Furuta where she successfully fled the facility though this left her exhausted and hungry. She was eventually found by a fellow Ghoul named Shachi who decided to take her in his care. In that time, Rize grew close to Shachi and saw him as her surrogate father with her taking his surname of Kamishiro. In those years, Rize grew up but this led to a similar growth in her appetite with her wanting to eat humans. As a result, she began overeating with Shachi warning her against such excess activity that would draw attention to her. Despite Shachi's protests, Rize continued eating people with her actions eventually resulting in a Commission of Counter Ghoul raid in the 6th ward that resulted in her adoptive father's capture. Rize would then begin living nomadically, drifting through the different wards while continuing her binge-eating habit. Six months ago, Rize lived in the 11th ward where her activities attracted the attention of the ghoul investigators and made them move into that ward. She decided to leave when the ghoul investigators started to act. Before she left, she killed Hagi who was the leader of the ghouls in the 11th ward, and two others.

Later on, she came to find a new prey in the form of a young boy named Ken Kaneki when she noticed that he developed a crush on her. The two began engaging in conversation with him after frequenting Anteiku for a while. Using their mutual love of books to her advantage, they planned a date soon after meeting. After a harmless day spent together, Rize tricked Kaneki into escorting her back home down a deserted area where she revealed herself to be a ghoul as she took a bite of Kaneki's shoulder. Kaneki struggled against her, but Rize was too strong and easily pierced him in the abdomen with her Kagune. Before Rize could finish him off, multiple steel beams from the construction area above fell onto Rize, crushing her. The disturbance was heard by a passerby, who then called for help, and both were sent to Kanou General Hospital. Whilst there, Professor Akihiro Kanou pronounced Rize was too far gone and decided to transplant her organs into Kaneki without contacting their relatives, given the urgency of the situation. However, he secretly kept her alive to use for his experiments. Kaneki in the aftermath began to manifest hallucinations of 'Rize' in his mind during times of extreme stress. He later came to be captured by the ghoul Yamori who had been hunting Rize and after finding her scent on Kaneki decided to torture the youth. During Yamori's torture sessions, Kaneki began seeing a hallucination of 'Rize', who helped him embrace his ghoul side and eventually beat Yamori. It was in this period of time when Kaneki had a flashback about his mother and how she eventually died from over-exhaustion. They conversed about what the 'right' thing to do was, until Kaneki denounced his mother's way of life and 'devoured' 'Rize's' strength

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Rize Kamishiro was a slender girl with chest-length purple hair that has bangs swept to the left side, purple eyes, full pink lips and an hourglass figure. As a Ghoul, her excess eating habits led to her being known by the nickname of Binge Eater (大喰い Ōkui, "Binge Eater" or "Gluttony", literally "Big Eater").

She was a voracious, independent ghoul who acted as a femme fatale to those who fell victim to her charms.

Powers and abilities

Though appearing human, Rize Kamishiro was in fact a Ghoul (喰種グール, gūru) and thus possessed superhuman abilities including increased senses, endurance and strength. These abilities were derived though from her ability to feed with human flesh being the only thing that could nourish her.

As a Ghoul, she possessed a kagune (赫子, red child) that was a predatory organ and functioned as her primary weapon. Kagune were composed of Rc cells, which flowed just like blood where they could become as solid as teeth and said to be akin to 'liquid muscles'. The Rc cells were released from the kakuhou (赫包, kakuhō, approximately red wrap) that were a sac-like organ containing Rc cells which pierced the skin and the released Rc cells formed the kagune. The kagune acted as voluntary muscles for ghouls who could control them whenever they want and repeatedly harden and soften them at will. A Kagune's size depended on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. In Rize's case, she had a rinkaku kagune (鱗赫, rinkaku, "scale-red") that had an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and were released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and some could even survive the most critical of damage. Its peculiar appearance and structure yields superior striking power and they excel in brute strength. Her regenerative powers were a result of the Rc cells easily binding together with their composition being similar to a liquid. However, this meant that the binding force among the Rc cells were weak, therefore making the kagune very soft and easy to break.

She came to be used as the host for the body of the Dragon (竜, Ryū) that sprouted and began transforming humans into Ghouls.
