They were brought before Kagaya Ubuyashiki who had decided that the pair were to be allowed to remain as Demon Slayers. However, several members of the Hashira were opposed to fighting alongside a demon such as Nezuko and instead believed the pair should have been killed. Ultimately, Sanemi Shinazugawa attempted to prove his point by inflicting wounds in Nezuko to anger her and also to cut himself to make her attack him. However, Nezuko refused thus showcasing her strength of will over her demonic hunger whilst Giyu Tomioka and Sakonji Urokodaki both made a promise to commit seppeku alongside Tanjiro if the demon girl ever harmed a human life. Thus, the Kamado siblings were allowed to remain within the Demon Slayer Corps and to help take down the Twelve Kizuki.

History

The Demon Slayer Corps (Japanese: 鬼き殺さつ隊たい, Hepburn: Kisatsutai?) was an organization of demon hunters that operated in Japan for thousands of years.

A group of Demon Slayers were dispatched to eliminate demonic activity at Natagumo Mountain (那な田た蜘ぐ 蛛も山やま Natagumo yama?) where the majority were taken control of by the Mother Spider Demon. She caused them to turn on each other thus killing the majority of their ranks. A summons was then went for further Mizunoto to reinforce their ranks with the Hashira Giyu Tomioka and Shinobu Kocho dispatched to aid the Demon Salyers against the Spider family. Giyu was successful in slaying Rui of the Twelve Kizuki with the remaining demon killed by Shinobu. During this time, the Demon Slayer Corps received a directive to transport the slayer Tanjiro and his demon sister Nezuko back to headquarters with the two being captured as a result.

Later on, the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku was on-board the Infinity Train when Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke were dispatched to accompany him. The train was then attacked by the Lower Moon Enmu who had been dispatched by Kibutsuji to eliminate the Demon Slayers and find Tanjiro Kamado.

Overview

Organisation

The Hashira.

In appearance, the Corps consisted of humans that had been trained to fight and slay demons with them numbering in the hundreds. Despite their work, they were not officially recognised by the government. It was noted that since ancient times they had hunted demons.

All members of the Demon Salyers possessed enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, stamina, durability, endurance, agility and mobility with this increasing based on rank. Demon Slayers were trained in the arts of Breathing Styles (呼こ吸きゅう法ほう Kokyū Hō?) that were a style of swordsmanship practiced and taught to members of the Corps. Total Concentration Breathing (全ぜん集しゅう中ちゅうの呼こ吸きゅう Zen Shūchū no Kokyū?) were elemental in nature and replicated it with the user's movements, techniques and abilities. All Breathing Styles were derived from Sun Breathing which was the earliest ancestor of the techniques.

Service within the Corps entitled its members to a salary with the higher ranks being paid more for their work.

Former Demon Slayers were known to serve as trainers that looked for recruits who they taught the breathing styles and fighting techniques before sending them off for the Final Selection.

Recruits were required to pass the Final Selection exam that was a test to determine their skill to join the Corps. This involved the examinees having to survive for seven days on a mountain top that was infested with demons. Those taking part had to do so without any outside aid and those that failed were simply killed by the demons inhabiting the area. Upon completion, the recruits were provided their uniform that was made of a highly durable yet light weight fabric that was resistant to damage from lower ranking Demons. Furthermore, they were asked to choose the material for their weapons with this being used to fashion their Nichirin blades. Finally, they were also provided a Kasugai crow that relayed orders and other communication to the Demon Slayer.

A number of the Demon Slayers were taught unique breath styles that were techniques used to allow them to perform their missions more efficiently.

Leadership of the Corps was held by a figure holding the title of Oyakata-sama (お館󠄃やかた樣さま Oyakata-sama?, lit. "Master"). As head of the Demon Slayer Corps, they were traditionally a member of the Ubuyashiki family. They undertook crucial responsibilities such as coordinating the deployment of Demon Slayers to areas plagued by demon activity, overseeing the Final Selection for aspiring Demon Slayers, and conducting meetings with the Hashira.

Within their ranks were an elite cadre of warriors known as the Nine Pillars (柱はしら, Hashira?) that consisted of the strongest combatants in the organisation. Such was their strength and conviction that meant that they were deeply respected by the Corps. Exceptional fighters could be designated as a Tsuguko (継つぐ子こ lit. successor?) who were personally designated successor of a Pillar.

Another position were the Cultivators (育いく手しゅ, Iku shu?) who nurtured swordfighters that wanted to become Demon Slayers. Each of them employed their own methods for training and are specialized in a specific Breathing Style. When a cultivator deemed their student ready, they granted permission for them to participate in the Final Selection. Supporting the Corps were the Kakushi (隠カクシ Kakushi?) who were uniformed people that helped in clean-up operations with their skills with the sword being limited. They were dispatched to help clean up after the death of a demon and to administer aid to the injured along with transporting prisoners.

Attached to the Corps were also the Swordsmiths (刀かたな鍛か冶じ Katanakaji?) from the Swordsmith Village. They were a dedicated group of skilled artisans specialized in the forging, repairing, and maintenance of Nichirin Swords who ensure the Slayers are equipped with formidable weapons. In addition, they also craft a range of combat and training equipment.

The Ubuyashiki Estate served as the central hub of the Demon Slayer Corps Headquarters. Over there, the leader of the Corps and their family resided, overseeing the daily operations of the Corps. This confidential location also hosted the semiannual Hashira Meeting, where the elite members of the organization gather to discuss important matters.

Equipment

Demon Slayers upon completing their training were given uniforms that were specially made and capable of surviving attacks from weaker demons. It was highly durable and light-weight with them being water-resistant and non-flammable.

The distinctive weapons of the Corps were the Nichirin Blades (日にち輪りん刀とう Nichirin tou?) that were created from Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore that was located on high mountains. It was said that the ore absorbed sunlight which was the primary weakness of Demons and thus it was seen as the only weapon able to kill such creatures. These distinctive blades were also known as 'Color Changing Swords' due to them adopting a color associated with their wielder.

They were known to use Wisteria within their arsenal as this was poisonous to demons. It could be used to create areas to ward away demons or be given as a talisman to protect someone from a demon.

The Demon Slayer Corps maintained a number of locations in Japan as part of their territory. This included the Butterfly Mansion that was used by the Insect Hashira and served as a place for healing for the injured. There was also the Swordsmith Village that was a hidden village where the swords were forged. The area around Fujikasane Mountain was part of the Corps territory and was the site of their Final Selection exam. The region was filled with Wisteria flowers that bloomed every season from the mountain's foot to its slope. It was used as a place to imprison demons that were used to test recruits. The flowers prevented the demons from escaping the mountain and left them trapped there thus making them tools for testing new inductees into the Demon Slayers ranks.
