Shiro (Deadman Wonderland)

Shiro is a female anime and manga character who features in Deadman Wonderland.

Biography

Shiro (Japanese: シロ, Hepburn: Shiro)

She eventually became a test subject in a series of experiments perpetrated by Hagire Rinichirō and Sorae Igarashi. During this time, Shiro was kept in the home of Dr. Igarashi with her befriending her young son Ganta Igarashi with the two being of the same age. They met with one another when Ganta saw her sitting on a tree and commented on her white hair. This led to Shiro becoming embarrassed about her hair but Igarashi told her that he liked it. As a result, Shiro felt better and the two started to play with one another where they became close friends and shared a common admiration of a superhero called Ace Man. Though at the Igarashi residence, secretly Shiro was subjected to experiments and suffered intense pain from regular injections. Thus, whilst normally getting along with Ganta, Shiro would violently bicker with him when in intense pain. A result of one of these incidents led to Shiro breaking his Ace Man action figure with an upset Ganta taking his toys away from her as he ran away in tears. Sometime afterwards, Ganta was approached by a rabid vile dog that was actually one of the other test subjects that had managed to escape from the laboratory. In fear, Ganta dropped to his knees and called out in desperation for Ace Man to save him. At that point, Shiro suddenly arrived when she jumped down from a window and landed on the dog with this knocking it out thus saving Ganta's life. Shiro vowed to become Ganta's "Ace Man" whenever he was In trouble.

Whilst in the Wretched Egg state, she dressed herself in a helmet and a cloak where she made her away outside Deadman Wonderland towards Nagano middle school. She floated outside the window of the classroom where Ganta Igarashi was studying when the lullaby played whereupon she attacked the class with her Branch of Sin. This attack killed every student in Ganta's class except for Igarashi himself who was the only survivor. After he regained consciousness, the Wretched Egg approached Ganta whilst holding the head of his class fellow Mimi. With a grin on her face, she approached him and implanted a Red Crystal in his chest. Igarashi fainted as a result whereupon the Wretched Egg returned back to Deadman Wonderland. When Ganta regained consciousness again, he was taken into custody where he never knew the attacker who had affected his life so greatly and referred to the person as the Red Man.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Shiro was an albino with chalk-white skin and even white hair but possessing red eyes. Her skin contained numerous heavy scars throughout her body due to being the subject of brutal experiments. She was said to resemble Mimi who was a girl in the same classroom as Ganta Igarashi at his school. Typically, she was clothed in a skin-tight bodysuit with her heels and toes being open wore large gloves that helped conceal her heavily scarred skin.

A result of the trauma caused by the torturous experiments done to her led to Shiro developing a homicidal maniacal split personality that was known as the Wretched Egg (レチッドエッグ, Rechiddo Eggu). For a time, Ganta knew of this other murderous personality as the Red Man (赤い男, Akai Otoko) due to her wearing a mask that obscure the face except for the mouth and also wearing a large cape.

Shiro is a clumsy and bubbly young girl. She has lots of energy, most likely from the fact she eats nothing but sweets. She is shown to have loved sweets throughout her life, particularly cookies, and her sweet tooth may be her way of staying connected to her childhood. She has a very childlike outlook on life; this leads to her not understanding much: Shiro didn't even understand the concept of a girlfriend and had a simplified outlook on love.

Shiro and Wretched Egg were able to interact while they were asleep and dreaming. Shiro often asked why Wretched Egg was trying to kill Ganta, though she never received a straight answer. Wretched Egg was extremely protective of Shiro, and claims that Shiro's pain 'belongs to her.' To that end, Wretched Egg endured the pain caused by the experimentation performed on her, and it was because of Shishito Madoka's 'Iron Maiden' inflicting such excruciating pain on Shiro that she was able to take over completely. The Wretched Egg also tries to comfort Shiro subconsciously, such as when she ate Shiro's unfinished pudding, even though she hates sweets. This causes Shiro to think Ganta had eaten it, making her happy as she thought that Ganta had visited. Shiro referred to Wretched Egg as 'Aceman,' and was completely aware of her presence within her mind, and by extension, what she, herself, was.

Unlike Shiro, who harbors an innocent love for Ganta, Wretched Egg's feelings for him are much more complicated. On one hand, he and Sorae were the only two good things in her life, and her sole source of happiness in her childhood. On the other, she expresses a strong resentment toward him for having forgotten about her, and leaving her behind when she needed him the most. She revealed in Chapter 55 that she was in love with him, and feels that the only way he can redeem himself for how he had hurt her was by killing her and ending her suffering. To that end, she gave him his Branch of Sin, and went to great lengths to make him stronger, both physically and mentally.

Despite knowing full well that Sorae was the one who subjected Shiro to such horrific treatment, she appeared to hold little to no ill will towards her. Sorae was the one who continued to give her hope that her wish to die could still be granted, and after Ganta was sent away, she continued to care for her while Hagire continued to exploit her powers, until she completed the Mother Goose System and committed suicide, both out of guilt for what she did to Shiro, and to prevent that Hagire from finding out how to turn it off.

Powers and abilities

She was the original Deadman and the source of the Branch of Sin infection with this giving her the power to control her blood freely out of her body. This gave her a great number of abilities beyond that of normal human being such as the capacity to levitate to fly. Her body was capable of healing itself from injuries as she restored her broken legs within moments when Genkaku attempted to kill the escaping Deadmen. Her Branch of Sin manifested as a whip of blood and struck with such a force to massacre dozens of people and destroyed parts of the body instantly with this resembling a hurricane.

Shiro was able to implant a red crystal in others that embedded into their chest and turned them into a Deadman. Such a technique was used on Ganta Igarashi thus turning him into one of their number and giving him the ability to control his own blood as a weapon.

She was held as being the strongest of the Deadmen with her power being contained by the Mother Goose System

• In Deadman Wonderland, Shiro appeared in the setting of the anime television series where she was was voiced by Japanese actress Kana Hanazawa and by English actress Monica Rial in the dubbed series.

Video games

• In Lollipop Chainsaw, Shiro's bodysuit appeared as an unlockable outfit in the video game Lollipop Chainsaw that could be worn by the protagonist Juliet Starling. Once equipped, it gave the character Shiro's appearance as well that included her white hair and red eyes.
