Captain Davies was the alcoholic and cantankerous captain of the Covena whose job it was to ferry Montgomery from Africa to Dr. Moreau's island. He hated Moreau, considering him a "grave-robbing ghoul," and mistreated the scientist's creations, especially M'Ling. When Edward Parker intervened on M'Ling's behalf and punched Davies, he earned the captain's hatred.
Upon arriving at the island, Davies threw Parker overboard as revenge for hitting him. He then put into port at Apia where he was confronted by Parker's fiancee, Ruth Thomas, who, backed by the American consul, compelled Davies to give up the location of Moreau's island by threatening to revoke his license because he abandoned Parker.
