Her brother Hector had been the first big-name Hispanic super hero with Ava worshipping him but had never realised how hard a life he had lived. He always seemed so sad with the young Ava once asking her parents about it and they told her that they would tell her the reason when she was older. However, her parents were later killed because of a villain targeting the White Tiger's family and Hector was said to had died on the inside that day. Afterwards, he almost never visited Ava when she stayed with their sister because he blamed himself for their parents death and feared it would happen again to his siblings. Despite this, she still admired him and said that he dedicated his life to being a hero which meant he never would have wanted innocent people to die because of him. (Avengers Academy v1 #24)
Ava said that she held people up to high standards because her brother sacrificed so much to be a hero that she expected similar things from others though later admitted that this was not fair on anybody. (Avengers Academy v1 #24)
