Uryū was about to intervene when Ichigo vaulted over the barrier. Ishida later observed Ichigo Kurosaki in his Shinigami form whilst walking down a street. He came to save a Plus soul from a Hollow, and goes to a location where he can see the Plus. He then spots Ichigo again as Ichigo performs a Soul Burial on the Plus. Later in school, he is present when Ichigo is dragged off by Rukia Kuchiki to defeat a Hollow. However, Uryū defeats this Hollow before them, and when Rukia and Ichigo get there they begin arguing with each other. Uryū approaches them and states that a Hollow is here - just before Rukia gets a message signaling that a Hollow has arrived. After Ichigo asks Rukia which way the Hollow is, Uryū mocks him for not being able to sense something as simple as that, and tells him he should not even call himself a Shinigami. Uryū then uses his Quincy bow, Kojaku, and fires an arrow from it, killing the Hollow. Ichigo asks him what he is, and Uryū introduces himself, stating that he is a Quincy and that he hates Shinigami. Ichigo is confused by this statement, and Uryū tells him that he hates him for being a Shinigami. At school, Michiru Ogawa hands him a ripped doll to fix. He then takes a sewing set out and easily repairs the broken doll. As he heads home, he spots Ichigo following him. He mocks Ichigo for not being able to hide his spiritual pressure, and for his inability to sense others with high spiritual pressure. He tells Ichigo that since the day he entered school, he knew of his high spiritual pressure, when he became a Shinigami, and even Rukia's true identity. Uryū then draws out something called Reiraku, and states that it is something that compresses and visualizes the spiritual aura in the atmosphere. He again mocks Ichigo's ignorance, and, grabbing hold of Ichigo's Reiraku, points out that the Reiraku of Shinigami are colored red. He then tells him that he is a Quincy, and that he holds the power to kill Hollows. He asks Ichigo to fight him to show the difference in their strength.

Ichigo told him the idea of competing against him was stupid, as he has nothing to do with his grudge against the Shinigami. However, Uryū provokes him by stating that he is only a temporary Shinigami who cannot even do anything without Rukia around. Ichigo tells him that he will give this competition a shot and enters his Shinigami form, with Kon going into his Human body. He asks Uryū for the rules of this fight. Uryū takes some Hollow bait out and states that he is going to bring Hollows into the town. He declares that whoever kills the most Hollows within twenty-four hours is the winner. However, Ichigo protests against this idea, as the people in town will be put in danger, but Uryū tells him that caring for others is unnecessary, and that he should be confident enough to save them all. Hollows begin breaking into Karakura Town, and Uryū shoots the first one down. As he is doing this, Ichigo grabs him and tells him to bring the town back to normal. However, Uryū states that it is too late, and that instead of focusing on him, he should be focusing on the Hollows so he can save as many people as possible. He tells him that Hollows have a tendency to go after people with high spiritual pressure, and Ichigo realizes his family is in danger. He immediately runs off to save his family, missing what Uryū tries to tell him as he leaves. Uryū begins shooting Hollows from the high vantage point of a bridge, reaching up to eleven kills. After killing many Hollows, Uryū's shots begin to get weaker, and he realizes that the numbers should not be this high. He decides not to complain and remembers his mentor, telling him he has not made any mistakes and that he will avenge him.

Uryū then encountered Rukia and Kon after Kon rescues Rukia from a weak Hollow. Uryū comments on their current location being safe, which prompts Kon to question him, saying that it is because of Uryū starting the fight that the town is danger. Uryū addresses Kon, admitting that while he did start the fight, he will not allow anyone in the town to die, even if Ichigo dies. Suddenly, the weak Hollow returns to attack. Uryū prepares to shoot the Hollow, only for it to be swiftly killed by Ichigo as he arrives at the scene. Ichigo starts arguing with Kon while Uryū looks on. Irritated that they will not stop arguing, Uryū fires an arrow at Ichigo, who blocks it. Ichigo then insists that it is a battle between him and Uryū, and that the amount of Hollows they beat is irrelevant. Before Uryū can respond, Kon points out a large crack forming in the sky, and Uryū notes that the Hollows are converging upon it. Uryū begins to fire arrows into the group of Hollows and charges towards it, shouting that the last Quincy will be their opponent. Ichigo learns about the fall of the Quincy at the hands of the Shinigami. He runs after Uryū, and attacks several Hollows around him. Ichigo tells him that he does not know or care about whether the Shinigami or Quincy were right, and expresses his frustration at Uryū's methods, but is interrupted by him. Uryū tells him that he thought the Shinigami were correct, until his sensei was killed in front of him. Uryū tells Ichigo of his sensei's attempts to convince the Shinigami to work together with the remaining Quincy, but he died fighting a group of Huge Hollows without achieving that goal. Uryū says that he must prove the strength of the Quincy to the Shinigami. Ichigo points out that his sensei's wish was to work together, not to prove the Quincy's strength, and asks if he will do that now, saying that fighting back-to-back is the best way to deal with the situation.

As Uryū dismissed the idea as nonsense, Ichigo attacks a Hollow that had come up behind Uryū, who kills another Hollow. Uryū insists that he is not cooperating, but that he simply had to kill it, or else he would have been killed. Ichigo tells him that is good enough. Ichigo states his own reluctance to work with Uryū, and asks him if he will cooperate. Uryū kills another Hollow in reply. The pair agree to beat each other up after the Hollows have been dealt with, but as they are about to attack the horde of Hollows, a Menos Grande rips apart the sky. After they argue about how to deal with the Hollows and the Menos, Ururu Tsumugiya, Tessai Tsukabishi, Jinta Hanakari, and Urahara Kisuke arrive to fight the Hollows. Uryū's attention is turned to the emerging Menos Grande. Ichigo tells Uryū that there is no way they can figure out how to fight such a monster, and that they will have to simply cut it repeatedly until it succumbs to its injuries. He charges towards the Menos, calling for Uryū to accompany him, despite Uryū's request for him to wait. Uryū fires an arrow at the Menos' neck, but does little damage, confirming his thoughts on how he will not be able to do much damage. He then checks on Ichigo's status, and asks what was he thinking. In response to Uryū's questions, Ichigo tells him that he is alright, and that he thought he could cut its feet off and work his way up to the head, killing it that way. Uryū complains about his way of thinking and places his hand on Ichigo's Zanpakutō. Uryū notices that Ichigo's power is flowing into his bow. Thinking about the differences between the fighting styles of the Quincy and Shinigami, Uryū comes up with an idea to make use of Ichigo's large amount of power. Ichigo is shocked to see the increased size of Uryū's bow, and as he asks what happened to it, Uryū tells him his idea.

Returning to school the next day, Uryū's injuries came to attract the attention of his classmates. Afterwards, Ichigo came to invite him to join his group for lunch. At first, Uryū refused but came to change his mind upon hearing that Keigo Asano was going to treat them. Whilst there, the atmosphere was very tense with Ishida asking Ichigo on why he was invited and questioned his motivations leading to the two bickering during the meal. Later on, Uryū came to intervene when Rukia was confronted by [[Renji Abarai]] and [[Byakuya Kuchiki]] who had come to take her to the Soul Society. In this time, he cam to battle Renji but ultimately Uryū was defeated where he was left badly injured from the fight. Abarai was prepared to kill Uryū when Ichigo arrived just in time but despite Kurosaki's skill he also came to be defeated by Byakuya. Rukia came to surrender herself to her fellow shinigami in the hope that it would mean both Uryū and Ichigo wold survive leading to all three departing to the Soul Society. Uryū came to be treated by Kisuke Urahara where he expresse concern for Ichigo to Urahara before departing. The experience made Uryū come to the realization that he was not strong enough and that the only one who could save Rukia was Ichigo.

Uryū Ishida in Bleach v1 #4.

Uryū Ishida (Japanese: 石田 雨竜, Hepburn: Ishida Uryū) was a male member of the Quincy race born as the son of Ryūken Ishida (石田竜弦, Ishida Ryūken) and Kanae Katagiri. Originally, his father was set to marry another Echt Quincy named Masaki Kurosaki (黒崎 真咲, Kurosaki Masaki) that was to be arranged by his mother. However, he ended up marrying a maid that served the family with this being Kanae who bore him a son that they named Uryū Ishida. When he was young, his mother lost consciousness on the same day Masaki died, June 17th, and died herself three months later. Unknown to him at the time, this was the result of Yhwach performing his Auswählen technique and took her powers that resulted in her death. As a child, Uryū mostly interacted and trained with his paternal grandfather, Sōken Ishida. His father, Ryūken Ishida, was less than enthusiastic about being a Quincy, claiming that it was not a profitable occupation. Sōken told Uryū that he would someday understand his father's motives, but thus far this is not the case. This was compounded as Uryū would watch Ryūken dissect Kanae's dead body, and he begged his father to stop. On that day, he decided he would never become a doctor. At a fairly young age, Uryū's paternal grandfather was killed by Hollows right in front of him, and Uryū was unable to do a thing to protect him. This is one of the reasons why he hates the Shinigami, who did not come to rescue Sōken in time.

Uryū came to be treated by Kisuke Urahara where he expresse concern for Ichigo to Urahara before departing. The experience made Uryū come to the realization that he was not strong enough and that the only one who could save Rukia was Ichigo.

Soul Society

Looking to save Rukia, Uryū trained and equipped himself with better gear for the next time he battled against the Shinigami. In that time, he was at a secluded spot by a waterfall when he was found by Yasutora Sado, Orihime Inoue, and Yoruichi Shihōin.

Bounts

Arrancar

At Karakura Town, Uryū came to be attacked by a Menos Grande where he tried to use some Quincy equipment to defeat it but failed. The Hollow was only vanquished by the timely arrival of his father Ryūken Ishida.

Heuco Mundo

Afterwards, Uryū came to rest from his training when he was visited by Urahara. In this time, he came to learn that Orihime had been captured by Arrancar. This saw Ishida accepting Kisuke's offer in helping Ichigo rescuing her.

He attempted to stop the rampaging Ichigo but his friend in his powerful Hollow state instead attacked Uryū and injured him. This saw Orihime rushing to his side to heal his injuries whilst an attack from Ulquiorra Cifer damaged Ichigo's Hollow mask. He then fought back control of his own body where he came to apologise to his friends for what he did in that state as he prepared to battle Ulquiorra. However, the injuries sustained by Cifer were fatal and he perished from his injuries as a result. Uryū then urged Ichigo to go and help their friends whilst he assured him that under Orihime's care that he would make a full recovery.

Lost Substitute Shinigami

Thousand-Year Blood War

In the time afterwards, he worked with his friends as they continued to protect the city from threats such as Hollows. One day, whilst Ichigo was fighting the Hollows that attacked Ryūnosuke Yuki and Shino, Uryū arrived with Orihime and Sado, and they help him in the fight. Uryū commented that Ichigo's attack was dangerous. Two days later, they arrive at Ichigo's house, Uryū remarking that Ichigo has no etiquette. When Ichigo asks how he got in, he replies that Yuzu Kurosaki let him in, and asks him to get plates for the bread Orihime brought. He and Ichigo bicker over him ordering Ichigo around. Later, they begin to eat the bread Orihime brought, and he leaves the bread that he doesn't want for Ryūnosuke. Uryū questions if Asguiaro Ebern is an Arrancar, since it looked like he had part of a Hollow mask on his face. After Akon informs Ryūnosuke of Chōjirō Sasakibe's death, he remarks that the Soul Society probably gave Ryūnosuke that information to let Ichigo know what's happening. Orihime, Sado, and Uryū return to Ichigo's house at his request to hear from Nel Tu and Pesche about the Wandenreich's conquest of Hueco Mundo and capture of various Arrancar, including Dondochakka. Uryū states that he cannot accompany them, prompting Ichigo to say that he knew that, but called him anyway to avoid him sulking. Shortly after Ichigo and the others depart, Uryū goes to search through his family's archives. As he laments not finding the information he was seeking, he is discovered by Ryūken, who admonishes him for entering the archives without permission. Uryū questions his father over how the force invading Soul Society and Hueco Mundo could be Quincies, and is angered when Ryūken says it has nothing to do with him and tells him to leave. Uryū states that he has a right to know as the Last Quincy, though Ryūken tells him that the answers he was seeking were not here, before walking away. After searching through more of the archives and thinking about his grandfather, Uryū realizes what his father meant, and goes to his office. In his father's desk, he finds a journal with the Wandenreich insignia on it, which he recognizes as belonging to Sōken. While reading through the book, he is confronted once again by Ryūken. Uryū demands to know if the journal's contents are true, and whether Ryūken knows about Yhwach, the Wandenreich, and his mother. Ryūken repeats that it has nothing to do with Uryū, leading him to run out of the room in frustration.

Uryū settles by a riverbank, and continues to read Sōken's journal. He is surprised to learn of a Quincy extermination from 1,000 years prior, questioning how it might relate to the extermination from 200 years ago. Reading on, he learns that the Quincy empire of 1,000 years ago, known as the Lichtreich, attacked Soul Society, who opposed their plans to eliminate all Hollows, and were summarily routed by the Gotei 13. Uryū further learns that 200 years ago, the Shinigami enacted their plan to eliminate the remaining Quincies, and concludes that the two factions will forever remain at odds. As he thinks back on his interactions with Ichigo, however, Uryū was left with conflicting emotions.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Uryū Ishida was a bespectacled teenager of average height and slender build with chin-length black hair along with fair skin as well as blue eyes.

Typically, he often portrayed himself as a quiet and solitary person who tried hard to act cool when other people were around. His desire to be cool even extended to him wearing a mantle even though it served no purpose and also carried a spare in case his was damaged.

It was shown that he operated under a moral ethic he called the "Pride of the Quincy" and had a strong sense of justice. He tended to be very chivalrous where he said that he enacted justice on men who abused or treated women badly.

In battle, he had a tendency to not use lethal force especially if he could win without doing so. Instead, he aimed to simply incapacitate his opponent.

At Karakura High School, he came to be a member of the handicrafts club and was highly skilled at sewing. He did not mind stitching things for his friends though his sense of design saw him adding unexpected features to anything he worked on. Despite being a sewing expert, he was noted to hate buttons.

He loves wearing a mantle, even though it serves no purpose other than to make him feel cooler, despite the fact that it hinders his movement, even keeping a spare with him. He has a tendency to say things melodramatically. Uryū has proven to be gullible at times.

One of the reasons he hated Shinigami was over them not saving his grandfather from a Hollow.

Uryū Ishida was noted for being the son of Ryūken Ishida (石田竜弦, Ishida Ryūken) and Kanae Katagiri (片桐 叶絵, Katagiri Kanae). His father was one of the Echt (純血統 (エヒト), Ehito; German for "Real", Japanese for "Pure-Blooded"; Viz "Pure Bloods") Quincy and thus came from a bloodline consisting of pure members of their kind. He came to be a doctor in the world of the living and operated as the Director of the Karakura Hospital. Meanwhile, his mother was noted for being a Gemischt Quincy who had been a former maid in the service of the Ishida family.

His paternal grandfather was an Echt Quincy named Sōken Ishida (石田 宗弦, Ishida Sōken) who was noted to had been a kind man that Uryū had admired. His grandfather was killed right in front of Uryū when he was fairly young with him unable to do anything to protect him.

Powers and abilities

He was well-trained in both body and mind where he demonstrated substantial athletic abilities and a genius intellect. Uryū has an equally well-trained mind, having a genius intellect. He uses his intelligence to find weak points in his opponents, even overcoming disadvantages he has through thinking on his feet. He is able to deduce Ichigo's spiritual level, that Ichigo acquired his Shinigami powers in mid-May, and Rukia Kuchiki's real identity. He used his intelligence to find weak points in his opponents even overcoming disadvantages he had through thinking on his feet. After graduating from medical school, he came to be a doctor and was well-versed in medicine.

Uryū was a member of the Quincy that were a special tribe of humans who could harness and utilise spiritual energy. Primarily, this involved absorbing Reishi from the atmosphere that was then combined with his own spiritual energy to form weapons. In spiritual realms, he was shown to easily gather this energy to power himself with this being shown when he was in the Soul Society and in Hueco Mundo. He was adept as sensing Hollows over a significant distance and even determine their direction. Ishida was able to manipulate spiritual energy for offensive purposes where he commonly reshaped spiritual particles into various types of bow and arrows but can also concentrate spiritual energy into the form of swords. Hollows were noted for being poisonous to Quincy.

He came to learn the Hirenkyaku (飛廉脚, Pure Flying Step; Viz "Flying Bamboo-Blind Slide") that was an advanced speed technique that was the Quincy equivalent of a shinigami flash step or an Arrancar's Sonído.

Normally, he was armed with the traditional weapon of his people which was the Quincy Cross (滅却十字 (クインシー・クロス), Kuinshī Kurosu; Japanese for "Destruction Cross") that served as the source of his power. Its power was noted to grow as Uryū grew stronger making its abilities even more powerful.

Among the equipment he had available to him included:

  • Gintō (銀筒, Silver Tubes) :
  • Seele Schneider (魂を切り裂くもの (ゼーレシュナイダー), Zēreshunaidā; German for "Soul Cutter", Japanese for "That Which Slits the Soul") :
  • Hollow Bait (対虚(ホロウ)用の撒き餌, Tai-Horōyou no Makie; lit. "Scatter-Bait for use against Hollows") : a flat round tablet tat was crushed and scattered where it could summon Hollows to the scene. They were noted for being a valuable tool in helping a Quincy exterminate low-level Hollows.
  • Gintō (銀筒, Silver Tubes) : small containers used to store Reiryoku that was used as a component for Quincy spellcasting that resembled Kidō.
  • Sanrei Glove (散霊手套, Sanrei Shutō; lit. "Spirit-Scattering Hand Envelope"; Viz "Scattered Spirits Glove") :
  • Quincy Bangle (装身具, Sōshingu; lit. "Battle Accessory") :
  • Silber Draht (ズィルバー・ドラート, Zirubā Dorāto; German for "Silver Wire") :
