History

It was believed that the Mannites were created within a laboratory. (Astonishing X-Men v2 #2)

After it appeared Wolverine gave his life for them, the Mannites decided to live in seclusion in order to continue the next stage of their evolution to make his sacrifice not being done in vain. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #375)

The inability of the Mannites to pass for human limited their usefulness for covert operations leading to them being abandoned. However, they would become the first set of technological ancestors of the mechanical creations of Project Livewire. (Livewires v1 #2)

Overview

These were nanowoven artificial lifeforms that were grown via semi-random germination. This was in the hope of maximizing meta-talent function though they lacked an aesthetic sense making them have distorted human features. (Livewires v1 #2)

At a point in their lives, they went through 'the Changing' that was painful for them to experience. Each time, the change was different and when completed the Mannite became something different. The process involved the creation of a cocoon where they enter into a chrysalis state whilst their abilities developed. This was considered a natural aspect of their life cycle with fear making it painful and causing their developing powers to spiral out of control. As such, once they manifested a cocoon, a Mannite needed help to remain calm enough to allow the change to occur as the cocoon was a natural manifestation of their powers. Following the transformation, they were no longer human but instead became techno-organic beings. (Astonishing X-Men v2 #2)
