It was the mount of Hela goddess of death and served her long ago until her imprisonment with the wolf being left in an underground tomb of Asgard's dead. When Hela returned, she used the power of the Eternal Flame to awaken the dead along with the wolf that helped her in taking over Asgard. Fenris Wolf was sent to the Bifrost to prevent the Asgardian's from fleeing where it nearly killed them until the Hulk battled the beast.
