History
Origin
The New 52
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events.
During the 1880's, the leaders of the newly established Gotham City had proposals to establish a prison on Blackgate Isle. (All-Star Western v3 #3)
After a murder, Barbara Gordon noted the death being similar to her brother James Gordon, Junior who was locked in Blackgate with her visiting to make sure he had not escaped. Once there, she had a discussion with her estranged brother and came to learn from him that he had a fan sending him letters who may have become a copycat serial killer as a result with him giving her the correspondence sent to him. - In Gotham, Blackgate was referred to in the live-action series. In the episode "Mad Grey Dawn", a framed Detective James Gordon was sentenced to Blackgate prison for the murder for Theo Galavan.

- In The Dark Knight Rises, Blackgate Penitentiary appeared in the live-action film of the Dark Knight Trilogy. After Bane took over Gotham City, he blew up the gates of Blackgate releasing all the prisoners bringing anarchy to the city.
