History
Espers (Japanese: 能力者, Hepburn: Nōryokusha?, lit. "Ability User") was the term that referred to human beings that developed extrasensory powers and a talent that was rooted in psychokinesis.
Academy City then established the Power Curriculum Program (時間割りカリキュラム Jikanwari (Karikyuramu)?, lit. "Academic Timetable", Yen Press: Supernatural Ability Development Program) that was a large-scale study program alongside regular curriculums at the school designed to unlock the student's potential in gaining their ability. Those that had gone through the program were officially classified as Espers.
Overview
In appearance, Espers appeared as normal human beings but had superhuman abilities allowing them to manipulate some force in the world through psychokinesis. Each individual had a talent rooted in science and thus were unable to use magic without hurting themselves. It stemmed from their bodies radiating an AIM Diffusion Field that was a natural energy field that could be detected through machines with different abilities producing a different energy field. Use of their abilities required a degree of mental calculations and concentration. Thus, anything that affected them mentally whether it was pain, exhaustion or confusion could mean that they could not perform the necessary calculations that meant their powers would not work.
They were divided into categories ranging from Level 0 to Level 5 with the higher number indicating a greater level of power. Those with Level 0 had no noticeable Esper talent and showed no noticeable abilities. Academy City was involved in research and experimentation to increase the powers of a Level 5 to allow them to transcend to Level 6.
