Mallen

Mallen's parents were killed in a shootout with the FBI over weapons violations in Texas. After being in a tragic farm accident as a child and forever being referred to as "Miracle Baby", he grew up bitter, grew a sense of hatred for government and believed in white superiority aligning himself with a small cell of domestic terrorists. In Bastrop, they were given the experimental-Extremis drug (which was created by Aldrich Killian) by a supplier whose identity wasn't known yet. Mallen took it, and had a massive spasm, and was locked down by the other two. 2 days later, emerging from an external scab-like cocoon, he emerged as a superhuman threat.

Under Extremis, Mallen attacked the Houston FBI branch, with him slaughtering every one in the building, even scaring the terrorists themselves. While in a van, he was confronted by Iron Man who had the others arrested. In a fight, he badly injured Stark in his armor (shattering his right knee, cracking his chest plate, and crushing his right hand) and then set out to kill the U.S. leaders in Washington, D.C. He briefly stopped to talk with a protester, and ended up murdering her over her view

Mallen was intercepted outside by Iron Man, he himself having taken Extremis. Stark discovered that Extremis designer/former girlfriend Dr. Maya Hansen (who helped Aldrich Killian create Extremis) was the one dealing the drug to the terrorists Mallen was involved in.

Biography

Mallen

Young Mallen sat helplessly in the corner as his parents and relatives discussed the government closing in around them for illegal arms operations. His family was all shot and killed by the government officials. (Iron Man v4 #3)

Mallen joined a group of domestic terrorists seeking to destabilize the government. They soon received the stolen Extremis, a super-soldier injection that would grant its user vast super human powers. (Iron Man v4 #6) In Bastrop, Texas, ignoring any reservations he may have had, Mallen had Beck inject him with the Extremis. He cried out in pain and collapsed. When it didn't work immediately, they wondered if it was a dud, but Beck and his ally fled when Mallen started vomiting a black tarry substance. Days later, Mallen slowly recovered, a mass of scabs, as the Extremis regrew his brain pathways and his internal organs. Within a few more days, though in incredible pain, Mallen became aware of his situation and his developing hew powers, his eyes and teeth bright red. (Iron Man v4 #1) Mallen went right into the FBI building and started attacking the agents there, brutally slaying them in a mess of blood and bone. He shrugged off their bullets and killed dozens of others by setting them aflame with fire from his mouth. Mallen returned to his allies, pleased with himself. (Iron Man v4 #2)

Afterwards, he was riding in the back of his van, thinking about his childhood, when the van was attacked by Iron Man (Tony Stark), who seared the van in half with his repulsor rays. Mallen easily survived the wreck and attacked the hero, refusing to stand down. He shrugged off Iron Man's repulsors, breathed fire at him, then grew small wires from his fingertips that overloaded the armor. Mallen tossed Iron Man into oncoming traffic and leapt after him. He was soon held off briefly by sonics, but managed to catch Iron Man's fist and crush his hand. After shaking off several small missiles, Mallen punched Iron Man's torso, cracking his armor. He then picked up a car and prepared to crush the hero. (Iron Man v4 #3) Iron Man managed to knock Mallen back with another blast, and Mallen chose to flee when he saw military helicopters surrounding him. He ran, at three hundred miles per hour, toward Washington, DC, to continue his attack. He stopped briefly to talk to a girl he thought he could relate to as she shared his distrust of the country and government. When it turned out she did not, he decapitated her and continued running. (Iron Man v4 #4)

Mallen arrived in Washington, DC, where he was attacked by Iron Man, unaware that Iron Man had now undergone the Extremis project himself. Mallen shrugged off several explosions, but he refused to yield. He fired an electric burst at Iron Man, who now appeared to be faster than Mallen. Iron Man sent Mallen flying through the air in an electrical explosion, then pounded Mallen through several walls. They continued trading punches, but Mallen refused to yield. Finally Iron Man blew a hole through Mallen's chest, then decapitated him. Mallen's body fell dead. (Iron Man v4 #6) One of Mallen's victims was revealed as Robert Montoya. (Iron Man v4 #10)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Powers and abilities

Due to the mutation that resulted by consuming the Extremis drug, Mallen gained the abilities of superhuman strength, speed (shown to run faster than 200 mph), stamina, agility, healing, endurance and durability. He can also exhale a fiery breath, and also has sharp claws and the ability to generate massive electric discharges.

Mallen had greater resistance to physical injury than an ordinary human. He was able to withstand bullet impacts and direct fire of Repulsor Blasts without feeling pain, at a potency higher than which a Repulsor Blast needs to have to cut through metal, only suffering minor wounds. (Iron Man v4 #3)

At his discretion, Mallen's lungs fill with fire plasma which he exhales through his mouth. He was shown torching a lobby full of people through this method. (Iron Man v4 #2)

Notes

  • Mallen was created by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov where he made his first appearance in Iron Man v4 #1 (January, 2005).

In other media

Television

  • In Iron Man: Armored Adventures, Mallen appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "Extremis". Instead of a terrorist, Mallen used to be an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., but was fired for unstable psychological behavior. Out of spite, he stole their experimental super-soldier serum Extremis, injected himself with it and was transformed into a superhuman, whereupon he started assaulting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents all over the city. Iron Man shows up to stop him, but Mallen mercilessly beats him to near-death. Mallen is driven off and subsequently goes on another rampage, whereupon he is confronted by Black Widow and Nick Fury, who are easily beaten. However, Iron Man (after injecting himself with a controlled low dosage of the Extremis serum and gained enhanced physical, mental and cyberpathic abilities) intervenes and electrocutes Mallen into a coma who is then taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

Motion Comic

  • In Iron Man: Extremis, Mallen appeared in the setting of the motion comic where he was voiced by actor Ed Paul.
