Biography
Pre-Crisis
Bartholomew "Bat" Aloysius Lash
After meeting a girl and her boyfriend, Bat Lash heads out of town. Soon afterwards, he came to find himself a pheasant that he shot for dinner, and headed into the nearby town of Welcome to find a place to prepare it. Arriving at a bar, he met a woman named Diane who worked there. Lash asked her to prepare the pheasant, but she said that she was leaving town just like everyone else. The reason was because they had been having trouble lately. Bat insisted that she stayed and cooked his pheasant, where he headed over to the store to get some ingredients. Whilst there, the shop keep was also preparing to leave town. In walks two ruffians, insisting that they leave town. Bat Lash takes out the two men with two shots and heads back to check on his dinner. Diane finally agrees to cook his bird, so Bat decides he better get some fine wine. On his way there, Quincy decided to ask Bat to leave town while his two goons ambush Bat. They do not get the drop on Bat though, and one more body is added to the body count. Quincy was hung up to dry, and swears vengeance on Bat. At the wine cellar, the shopkeeper was also trying to get out of town. Quincy showed up with five of his goons and violence breaks out. Bat makes a point to let the thugs know that he hates violence, and just wants to be left alone - as he brawls with the goons. Clearly outmatched, the goons run off and head to 'the Boss'. Hearing the news, the 'Boss' and his Coombine, which includes the town Bank-owner decide they they need to take care of Bat, or their plan will be ruined. The boss decides it best to poison his dinner - the bird he had been talking about so much. Bat heads back to the tavern with the wine just before the pheasant's done, allowing him plenty of time to kiss the cook. Unfortunately, Quincy called him out, with two thugs hiding in ambush on either side of the door. The wiley Lash decided to come out the window and dispatches them. Bat heads back and is ready to take a bite of Pheasant. He offers Diane some, and she reveals that it is poisoned. Bat told Diane to explain herself, and she hands him a stack of ill-gotten cash that she 'took off the top' while sneaking out a gun and talking about marriage. Bat stopped her from grabbing the gun, and decided to marry her. As they leave town to start their new life together, Bat makes a quick stop by the jail and has her locked up for conspiring with the bad-guys. (Showcase v1 #76)

Notes
- Bat Lash was created by Joe Orlando, Carmine Infantino, Sheldon Mayer and Sergio Aragonés where he made his first appearance in Showcase v1 #76 (August, 1968).
- In American Comic Book Chronicles: 1965–1969 (2014), it was noted that newly installed editorial director of DC Comics Carmine Infantino and his editor, Joe Orlando, came up with the name and basic premise of the loner whose family had been wiped out by murderous thugs, and then brought in Sheldon Mayer (former DC editor and creator of Sugar and Spike) and Sergio Aragonés (an artist best known for his comedic illustrations in Mad magazine) to further flesh out the concept.
- An advertising slogan used to promote Bat Lash's first appearance in Showcase read, "Will he save the West or ruin it?".
- In Comics Interview v1 #35 (1986), an interview with writer Denny O'Neill wrote on the character, "he was a charming anti-hero, or as close to a charming anti-hero as comics ever came—at least as we did him. In subsequent handlings Bat Lash became a churlish anti-hero. Sergio [Aragonés] and I tried to make him in the tradition of the charming rogue. Bat had a conscience represented by the flower in his hat which he inevitably threw away whenever he was doing something ratty".
- In Earth-One continuity, Bat Lash's father was named Lemuel whilst in the New Earth continuity his father's name was Zeke.
Alternate Versions
- In The Multiversity Guidebook v1 #1 (2015), an alternate version of Bat Lash appeared in the new Justice Riders reality that was designated as Earth-18 in the new Multiverse.
