Biography

Origin

O-Sensei

In 1895, a Japanese army captain stationed in Manchuria faced a Chinese captive in unarmed combat. Fearing his superior officer would lose the battle, a Japanese soldier shot the captive in the middle of the fight. This horrified the captain, who condemned the action, asserting that disgrace had been brought upon the entire Japanese army for this act. To atone, the captain honored the dying man's final request, pledging himself to take the man's place. In memory of the victim, the captain began studying ancient scriptures, practicing the ancient disciplines, becoming a master in many ways. He lived a life pure in its austerity, its discipline and, finally, in its harmony. In 1900, he refused a plea from his wife to return to Japan. He agreed to her last request: "Promise your bones will rest with mine".

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. O-Sensei is the headmaster of the Academy of the Bat, a secret training facility for China's Ministry of Self-Reliance, where prospective cadets strive to earn the cowl of the Bat-Man of China.

Films

  • In Batman: Soul of the Dragon, O-Sensei appeared in the setting of the animated film where he was voiced by actor James Hong. He was shown as being an elderly martial arts trainer who lived in the monastery at Nanda Parbat where he protected 'the Gate'. This was a portal to the dimension of the great serpent god Naga who had intended to invade Earth. O-Sensei came to take on a number of students including Rip Jagger, Lady Shiva, Ben Turner, Richard Dragon, Jade Nyugen and finally Bruce Wayne with the intention that they would replace him. Shiva came to be his best fighter who was given the Soul Breaker sword whilst Richard Dragon was actually prophecised to be the perfect host for the serpent god which was why O-Sensei kept watch over him. However, Jagger was revealed to had been a Kobra cultist who stole the Soul Breaker and murdered Jade in order to open the Gate. This caused several serpentine monsters to arrive which his students managed to defeat. However, the Gate remained opened with O-Sensei having to sacrifice himself to close it by walking through the portal. Once on the other side, his body was taken over by the great serpent god Naga who looked for another chance to enter Earth.
