Yumichika Ayasegawa is a male anime ad manga character who features in Bleach.

Biography

Yumichika Ayasegawa (Japanese: 綾瀬川 弓親, Hepburn: Ayasegawa Yumichika) was a soul that came to reside within the afterlife of the Soul Society. In those years, he came to be a friend of Ikkaku Madarame where the two went throughout the Rukongai together looking for fights. This was until one day when Ikkaku came to challenge Kenpachi Zaraki to a fight and lost to him. After a speech given to them by Zaraki about surviving a battle and living to kill the one who failed to kill them, Yumichika brought the news to the still recovering Ikkaku. He had heard of Zaraki becoming a captain of the Gotei 13 and the two decided to join the 11th Division to serve under him. Both of them would prove themselves to Zaraki and eventually became seated officers, Yumichika choosing the 5th seat as he found the number four to be an unattractive number and Ikkaku had already taken the third.

Later on, he alongside Ikkaku were alerted on the presence of intruders having infiltrated the Soul Society. Ayasegawa and Madarame would find Ichigo Kurosaki and Ganju Shiba shortly after they arrive in the Seireitei. Following a brief exchange of words, Ganju attempted to flee with Yumichika giving chase, though Ganju spends most of the time running away from Yumichika, using his earth magic to aid in his escapes. Finally, using a combination of his earth magic and one of his larger fireworks, Ganju manages to defeat Yumichika. While recovering with Ikkaku from his fight with Ganju, Yumichika asks Ikkaku what it is he's thinking about, revealing that his hair was the only thing damaged from Ganju's final attack, which brings much laughter from Ikkaku, causing Yumichika to put on a wig to cover it up. Ikkaku comments on Zaraki's fight with Ichigo, to which Yumichika states that their captain is on the losing side. Angered by this, Ikkaku scolds Yumichika by saying that Zaraki is the strongest captain in the Gotei 13 and that is why he follows him, also stating that Zaraki could never lose.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Yumichika Ayasegawa was a male soul who had colorful feathers on his right eyelashes and eyebrow. He has shiny skin, purple eyes, and jaw-length black hair, which, in conjunction with the feathers, gives him a somewhat feminine appearance. Before he joined the Gotei 13, he wore a simple kimono with a flowery pattern on it, did not wear any feathers on his eyes, and his hair was down his back and tied in a loose ponytail with shoulder-length pieces framing his face.

Yumichika is a complete narcissist who thinks of himself as the embodiment of beauty and judges everyone and everything based on his perception of their beauty, or lack thereof. He even chose his seat position based on its perceived beauty: he thinks that the number four (四) doesn't look beautiful, preferring the number three (三). Since the third seat was taken by his friend Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika instead opted for seat number five (五), which he thinks resembles three.[1] He has colorful feathers on his eyelashes and eyebrow. In the manga, especially the early chapters, Yumichika is drawn with rather shiny skin and hair (as much as black and white can reproduce the effect) and somewhat womanly in appearance, although this is not seen to the same extent in the anime. Yumichika is also incredibly vain; when a run-in with Ganju Shiba (whom Yumichika can never remember because "it is not in [his] nature to remember ugly faces") and his arsenal of firework leaves him with an afro, Yumichika dons a wig until his hair is back to normal. Yumichika sometimes tries to do Kenpachi Zaraki's hair for him in the morning because it can take him a long time, but Kenpachi always refuses, thinking the idea is gross.

Though shallow and annoyingly arrogant at first glance, Yumichika is a reliable and strong opponent in battle. He deeply respects his close friend Ikkaku as well as his captain, Kenpachi, although his mannerisms sometimes disturb or annoy them. Despite his vanity, he loves to fight, as do all members of the 11th Division. He does make a point of changing his clothes after a battle, though. Despite being only a 5th seat officer, he is capable of fighting at a level at or beyond most lieutenants[2] thanks to his zanpakutō's ability to drain other's spirit energy, which leaves them unable to fight. He only uses this ability when no one else is around, however, because such zanpakutō types are considered taboo amongst the brawl-happy 11th Division. This leaves his captain rather confused, since Yumichika always returns from battle not only completely unharmed, but usually in better condition than when he left.

Powers and abilities

Yumichika Ayasegawa was a Soul (魂魄, Konpaku) who came to be trained as a Shinigami (死神, death god(s); Viz "Soul Reaper(s)"). He possessed Reiryoku (霊力, Spiritual Power) and was trained to apply it as Reiatsu (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure) which could be used to achieve various feats.

Ayasegawa came to wield his own Zanpakutō (斬魄刀, Soul-Cutter Sword; Viz "Soul Slayer") which was known as Fuji Kujaku (藤孔雀, lit. Wisteria Peacock). The shikai command for Fuji Kujaku is "bloom" (咲け, sake, "bloom for me" in the English adaptations).

In its shikai, Fuji Kujaku takes the form of a sickle-shaped blade, or falx, distinguished from the khopesh by the cutting edge being located on the inside. A hinge at the hilt allows Fuji Kujaku to split into four identical blades. Although Yumichika doesn't admit it to his 11th Division comrades for fear of being hated, since 11th Division zanpakutō are generally used for direct attack, he has a kidō-type sword. By using the command sakikurue (裂き狂え, lit. tearing deviate), Fuji Kujaku flares up and takes the appearance of many peacock feathers, after which it drains the opponent's spiritual power. Yumichika uses this technique during his duel with Hisagi, and apparently wins with little effort. The limit of this power-leeching ability is unclear.

It is assumed Yumichika is attempting to learn his bankai, given his recent attempts at "conversation" with his sword; however, Fuji Kujaku is as narcissistic as Yumichika himself. In a very comical moment, Yumichika yells at his sword while trying to break it against a boulder. His "training" is interrupted when he, along with Rangiku, Ikkaku, and Hitsugaya, are visited by a group of Espada.

As a Shinigami, he came to serve in the Gotei 13 (護廷十三隊, Goteijūsantai; lit. "13 Division Imperial Guards"; Viz "Thirteen Court Guard Companies") that was the primary military force of the Soul Society. Within their ranks, he came to operate as a member of the Eleventh Division (十一番隊, jūichibantai; "Squad 11" in the English Dub) where he held the position of 5th seat of the 'Zaraki Corps'.
