Biography

Red Shift was a male extraterrestrial of unknown origins who came to become a Herald of Galactus. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #1) He had approached Galactus after a change came to the World Devourer where he could only subsist on living life force. As a Herald, Red Shift offered a constant supply of such worlds and went forth to find living worlds for his master. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #3)

He was by his masters side as the World Devourer consumed a technologically advanced world with a lone survivor escaping though they came to die on Earth. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #1) The Silver Surfer went out into space to confront his former master leading to a confrontation with Red Shift. During the fight, Red Shift created a tear into a black hole with the intention of the Silver Surfer to perish within it. Norrin Radd though forced himself and Red Shift into the singularity where he managed to escape whilst the new Herald had seemingly perished. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #2)

Red Shift later later revealed to had escaped back into the physical universe. By this point, he had joined forces with Firelord to oppose Annihilus's Seekers, who thought to capture and dissect them to learn of the Power Cosmic. Red Shift and Firelord aided the Silver Surfer against some of the Seekers, after which they joined forces to oppose Annihilus. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #2) Stardust appeared before Firelord, Red Shift, and the Silver Surfer, taking the Surfer's place alongside the others in exchange for the Surfer heeding the summons. Red Shift tried to keep the calm between Stardust and Firelord, asking the former to ignore the latter's provocation, 'Firelord is an acquired taste'. As soon as the Surfer departed, several ships of the Annihilation Wave arrived to attack them. The three heralds fought back fiercely against the invaders. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #3)

However, he managed to survive and returned back to the physical universe where he was present during a time when the cosmos was being invaded by the forces of the Annihilation Wave. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #2) The three Heralds then joined the forces of the United Front that had been gathered by Nova Richard Rider where they stood their ground on the world of Daedalus 5. During the fight against the Annihilation Wave fleet, Firelord proved instrumental in defeating the enemy's orbital forces leading to the capture of their queen Extirpia though the act left the Herald in a coma-like state. (Annihilation v1 #1) Red Shift and Stardust then went to the surface where the allied forces were attacked by Ravenous and his Seekers that were bolstered by the arrival of the Centurions. (Annihilation v1 #2) During the fight on Daedalus 5, Red Shift was the first to realize that the planet was lost to the Annihilation Wave. Together with Stardust he cleared a path to the emergency ships to give their allies the chance to escape. When Annihilus activated Galactus, who Thanos had turned into a weapon for him, Red Shift and Stardust bought their allies enough time to escape by blocking the attack for a few seconds. Red Shift was seemingly killed during this battle. (Annihilation v1 #3)

Overview

Personality and attributes

He believed affection made a person vulnerable and worthless with such feelings bringing about the person's ultimate destruction in the end. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #2) The Silver Surfer claimed that Red Shift was a monstrous person. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #3)

Powers and abilities

As a Herald of Galactus, Red Shift was empowered by Galactus with the Power Cosmic making him equal in strength to another Herald. It was said that he travelled in bursts of light. It was shown that he was as strong as the Silver Surfer and also capable of surviving the gravity inside of the black hole. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #2)

He was also armed with a pair of swords that provided him a number of additional abilities. Red Shift could use them in melee strikes against enemies. The blades were said to enhance his capacity to bend space as he could also use them to cut tears into dimensional rifts allowing him to displace objects through time and space. These dimensional portals were opened through a complex array of powers that involved manipulation of space/time and the electromagnetic energy that bound everything together. He could not only use these gateways for travel but could use them offensively against enemies as well such as creating a portal in front of him to intercept an energy blast then manifest its exit point heading towards another foe. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #2)

Red Shift was designated initially as a Universal-level threat by the Nova Corps but was later downgraded to a City-level danger. (Annihilation: The Nova Corps Files v1 #1)

After pledging allegiance to Galactus, Red Shift stood as a member of the Heralds of Galactus and served the World Devourer. (Galactus the Devourer v1 #1)

Notes

  • Artist Jon J. Muth commented on the character, "Beta Ray Bill is a great character, but he had nothing to do with my original character sketches for Red Shift. By the time John Buscema drew Red Shift in the Galactus mini-series, he had changed a lot."
