Shirogane (Karakuri Circus)

Shirogane are a people that feature in Karakuri Circus.

History

Shirogane were a race of people that were created by the Chinese alchemist Bai Yin using the power of the Soft Stone. Long ago, he and his brother Bai Jin travelled from their native land of Qing to Prague where they looked to learn the secrets of alchemy. During this time, both of them had fallen in love with the same girl named Francine though she came to choose Yin which left his brother in a jealous rage. He kidnapped Francine with the goal of making her fall in love with him but she was devoted to her husband Bai Yin. During this time, they stayed in Quiberon in France but the villagers there blamed Francine for a sickness coming to their home and locked her up. She eventually was killed when a fire started and she was burnt to death in her cell with Jin having a piece of her hair left to remember her. He attempted to recreate Francine as a doll but his creation had no emotions and he wanted to see her smile. In his madness, he created the automatons of the Midnight Circus with the intention of seeing her smile and commanded his creations perform by killing the people of the village as revenge for their treatment of the real Francine. He also created the Z.O.N.A.P.H.A. virus that caused the infected to be left in agonising pain unless they made someone else laugh. Despite all these efforts, the doll Francine never smiled and a frustrated Bai Jin decided to break the doll and left his creation though the automatons re-built her where they continued their efforts in making her smile. In the aftermath, Bai Yin came upon the town and decided to save the people of the village by giving them the Aqua Vitae from the Soft Stone later sacrificed his life by falling into the well of the village with the item. This caused his memories to merge with the waters and those villagers that drank from it become long-lived beings with supernatural powers driven by their need for revenge against the automatons leading to them being known as Shirogane.

Overview

Though said to be immortal, in reality the Shirogane simply aged slowly where they aged a year for every 5 years in the world.
