Biography

Origins

Discovering his powers in The Ray v1 #1.

Raymond Terrill

As a result of his powers, his 'father' kept Ray in pitch darkness and claimed that the boy had suffered from extreme photosensitivity. Thus, no source of light was allowed to the boy who believed that it was harmful to him. Raised in his home, he came to be a celebrity to the media who referred to him as the Night Boy. Raymond's education was done so by private tutors as he could not attend a regular school and he had almost no friends with the exception of Jennifer Jurden. On his 8th birthday, the media wanted to interview the boy where they had a condition that no light was allowed in the home. During the birthday, a camera was used that emitted a flash light that caused Raymond's body to emit light itself. This scared the attendees who fled the scene with the event being reported in the newspapers and Jenny's mother forbid her from visiting the boy. Despite that being the case, Jenny always remembered Raymond and kept in contact with him over the years. (The Ray v1 #1)

Ray was called by Uncle Sam when the Freedom Fighters were fighting the forces of Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard and Father Time’s S.H.A.D.E.. He managed to arrive into Sam’s Heartland pocket dimension where he helped defeat the traitor Stan Silver who operated as the team’s version of the Ray though he was in reality a S.H.A.D.E. spy. (Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters v1 #8)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

As a child, the media came to learn about him as a child who cause of his 'condition' had to remain in pitch darkness with newspaper referring to him as the Night Boy. (The Ray v1 #1)

Upon being exposed to sunlight he commented that it felt like tasting food for the first time after starving his entire life. (The Ray v1 #1)

After learning of his powers, he came to be convinced that he inherited them from his father with this being the only explanation on why he was sheltered for most of his life. (The Ray v1 #1)

One of his few childhood friends was Jenny Jurden who kept in contact with him over the years till Junior Prom. Raymond actually had a crush on her but never confessed his feelings after she said that she saw them as close friends. (The Ray v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

Ray’s energy abilities meant that he was a human power generator. (Final Crisis v1 #4) He shared a unique wave length with his father which was said to be the means they could communicate without speaking to one another. (The Ray v1 #2)

By powering up, he could converted his body almost entirely of energy allowing him to survive powerful physical blows. In one case, a punch that would have smash his skull through simply was reformed when he was in this form. (The Ray v2 #8) In one case, he could use this technique to help repair any damage done to him in his physical state. By converting himself to pure energy, he was able to atomize any foreign objects that struck him in his normal body and restore himself back to normal. (The Ray v2 #16)

He could travel at the speed of sound but in this state he could not make a sound. Ray had to maintain this speed as going any faster could risk triggering a sonic boom. (The Ray v1 #2) Such was his speed that he stated he could ride light beams seven times around the world in a second. (Final Crisis v1 #4) Ray was capable of travelling at lightspeed through deep space though one of the issues he suffered was a sense of direction. (The Ray v2 #8)

Terrill was capable of creating an air bubble where he could transport them through space. However, a problem was an oxygen supply for air breathing people with the pocket gradually turning to carbon dioxide unless the bubble was re-supplied with fresh air. (The Ray v2 #8)

It was said that he was potentially one of the most powerful beings ever born on Earth. (The Ray v1 #2)
