History

The Twins were a pair of programs that were created by the Machines that resided in the Matrix. They were said to be creations of one of the earlier incarnations of the Matrix but came to be Exile programs. In the current incarnation of the world, they came to operate as henchmen to the Merovingian.

Later, when Morpheus and crew free the Keymaker, the Merovingian sends the Twins to kill the 'Redpills' and recapture the Keymaker. They encounter Morpheus and Trinity in a parking garage and quickly demonstrate both their skill in hand-to-hand combat (using a straight razor) and their ability to become incorporeal, passing through bullets and walls harmlessly and healing injuries that they sustain while in corporeal form. Morpheus, Trinity, and the Keymaker flee in a Cadillac CTS, but they are pursued first by the Twins, then by police and by agents. Eventually, after a long chase along the freeway and firing upon Morpheus and company with an HK UMP, the Twins are dispatched by Morpheus when he causes their Cadillac Escalade EXT to overturn and explode. The explosion sends them into the air and they are last seen turning intangible. T

Overview

In appearance, the Twins were a pair of programs that took the form of albino humans with long hair who wore sunglasses and wore white clothes. They rarely spoke but when they did it was in a slow-paced English accent where they spoke to the other as 'we' rather than 'i'.

A unique ability of the Twins was the power to take a non-corporeal form that allowed them to phase through any solid matter, avoid gunfire and other weapons, explosions or other such attacks. Upon phasing back into corporeal form, any physical damage they may have previously taken was reset thus healing them in the process. They have the ability to take non-corporeal form that allows them to phase through any solid matter, avoid gunfire and other weapons, explosions etc. Upon phasing back into corporeal form, any physical damage they may have previously taken will be reset: Trinity emptied an entire pistol magazine into one of the twins arms and end up slashing Trinity's right arm with a straight razor after which it casually phased in and out of its corporeal form for a moment to heal 'just like new'.

The only real drawback of phasing into non-corporeal form is that the Twins will not retain any physical momentum they had when they were corporeal, such as when using vehicles, elevators, etc. A Twin can actually move fast enough to overtake a speeding car on a highway, but apparently they have to concentrate in order to do this. Morpheus was able to force one from their car by trying to stab it with a sword, which the Twin then phased-out to avoid: because it was stabbed unaware, it didn't think to keep its momentum moving along with the car until it was too late.

They were skilled martial artists and proficient with the use of bladed weapons. The Twins are skilled martial artists and proficient with the use of a knife, or straight razor. The Twins are able to fight even in the close confines of a car with ease.

Notes

  • The Twins were created by The Wachowskis with them being portrayed by actors Adrian Rayment and Neil Rayment where they appeared in the setting of The Matrix.

Video games

  • In Enter the Matrix, the Twins appeared as antagonists in the setting of the 2003 action-adventure video game. The Twins were shown attempting to stop Niobe and Ghost from escaping the Merovingian's mansion via a car chase in the multi-leveled garage. In this incarnation of the characters they do not wear their trademark glasses. Their smoking, overturned vehicle can be briefly seen on an overpass at one point during the highway chase level.
