Biography
Paul Phoenix (Japanese: ポール・フェニックス, Hepburn: Pōru Fenikkusu)
When Paul Phoenix was a young boy, he idolized Willy Bear Killer Williams, and now that he has grown up, he has become a prominent world warrior. Driven to be the best of the best, Paul travels the world in search of the perfect opponent.
He had previously fought Kazuya Mishima to a draw and unilaterally considered him to be his rival. He considered his true self to be there all the more when he is fighting and he was taking part in this tournament to look for stronger opponents.
Paul performed well in the first King of Iron Fist Tournament, and although he was the only competitor insane enough to challenge a fully-grown brown bear and win, he was defeated by Kazuya in a furious battle that lasted for hours. Shaking his head in disbelief, Paul left the Mishima estate and returned to New York. He found work in the south Bronx as a bouncer, where his ego and arrogance led him into numerous confrontations with unsavory characters, all of whom came off second best to his Judo techniques. After months of punishing street fighting throughout the USA, Paul emerges ready for the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2 with overwhelming confidence, believing himself to be the strongest fighter in the world.
Paul Phoenix is a man possessed. Forced to forfeit the second King of Iron Fist Tournament by a traffic jam, he has spent many years continuing his training to be the best of the best - and waiting for a chance to prove it. That chance has come in the form of an invitation to the third King of Iron Fist Tournament, and Paul is determined not to waste another opportunity for glory. Despite Paul's enviable career, he has yet to win the one tournament that would mark him as being one of the true greats. Last spring, he received an unexpected invitation to the '3rd King of the Iron Fist Tournament'. With training still a part of his daily regiment, he is still in peak condition and feels he still has what it takes to win the big one. Now thought to be 46 years old, he still has the eyes of an eagle with the strength and reflexes of a tiger.
Paul went undefeated through the entire King of Iron Fist Tournament 3 and even triumphed over Ogre. Swelling with pride, Paul returned home. However, unknown to Paul, Orge morphed into his second form - True Ogre - and the tournament continued after his departure. Although Paul claimed that he was the TRUE champion of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, few believed him. And even those who did, eventually grew tired of his attitude. Eventually, his dojo went out of business from the lack of students. One day, Paul spotted a newspaper flyer announcing The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4. Burning with the desire to win this Tournament, he decided to put his reputation on the line and prove once and for all that he was the one true champion.
Overview
Personality and attributes
An aggressive and hot blooded American, Paul lived by his wits working as a bodyguard and street fighter. Phoenix has apparently no allegiances to law enforcement agencies or any known criminal cartels, and has been classed as a low security risk. However his hot-headed nature could yet cause problems.
Paul was an overconfident, muscle-brained individual who never doubted himself. This overconfidence tendws to get the better of him, often leaving Paul in difficult and awkward situations. Despite this, his brash attitude has stayed consistent over time, and still he enters tournaments striving to prove himself to be the 'toughest in the universe'.
Phoenix was shown to be short-tempered, slightly dim-witted, loud, and reckless; however, he never does anything out of malice, and his overall exuberance seems to temper his other qualities and make him fairly easy to get along with.
As a child, he was fascinated by 'Bear Killer Willy Williams' where he grew up to be one of the world's renowned fighters.
In time, Paul Phoenix became a fighter who was admired by young kids worldwide.
Paul viewed Kazuya as his rival, as a previous fight with him ended in a draw though their rivalry was one-sided.
Powers and abilities
A hot-blooded American hand-to-hand fighter who likes training and knows martial arts. A noted judo expert who was also skilled in many forms of the martial arts. Paul's fighting style is a personal hybrid martial art based on Judo, as can be seen by his throws. His style has many other elements of other martial arts, including elements of Karate, (seen in his strikes) and even Baji Quan, visible in his variations of Chain Leg Kicks and back shoulder attacks. Paul's fighting style has probably undergone more changes following cross-training with his long-time training partners Marshall and Forest Law. His fighting style could also be interpreted as being old-school Judo, specifically, Judo before atemi-waza or striking techniques were removed from it's syllabus.
