Mantus was Bloth's second in command aboard the Maelstrom, a very tall, scrawny man with a nosering, which makes him seem reminiscent of a praying mantis (hence his name, apparently) and weak, but nothing could be further from the truth. Mantus is ruthless, calculating, and completely loyal to Bloth. He singlehandedly breaks and trains all the Dagrons Bloth acquires (and generally does a good job).

He is also quite wealthy. Or at least, he was at one point during his career as a pirate. He had a large chest filled with gold consisting of his ship's pay from Bloth, as well as his earnings from bets he'd won. The chest was constantly guarded, too, by a midgetlike alien who was chained to it. Unfortunately, years ago he'd made a bet with Zoolie. Zoolie won the bet, but Mantus never gave him the gold piece he'd won. Years later, while helping Ioz get the compass and First Treasure of Rule back from Bloth, Zoolie took it upon himself to steal Mantus' entire chest of gold.

Regardless of the loss of his wealth, Mantus has continued to stick with Bloth and, despite one or two occasions where he considered replacing him, Bloth has always viewed Mantus as his most valuable crewman.

Comics

Mantus was less loyal to Bloth, and with the help of Konk he overthrew him and took captainship of the Maelstrom for himself.

Video Games

In the SNES game Pirates of Dark Water, Mantus is faced by Ren, Ioz, and Tula in the Swamps of Miregone. Defeating him wins the Sixth Treasure of Rule. Mantus was a very deadly fighter, and very proficient at blocking the attacks of Ren and his crew, making him very difficult to defeat.
