History
On the coast of South Devon, a shoal of such octopi suddenly emerge where the voracious killed eleven people in boats with one attacking a man on shore before mysteriously disappearing back into the depths of the sea.

- H. G. Wells in "The Country of the Blind and Other Selected Stories" states that the name is a mock scientific term which is a mixture of Greek and Latin to mean "Fierce Squid".
