History
Rozen Maidens were a set of dolls that were believed to had been created by the legendary dollmaker known as Rozen. Each of them were brought to life by tapping into a force of energy known as the Rosa Mystica that made them living beings. These creations were masterpieces that were also referred to as living dolls. They held a deep respect for their creator who they called "Father" and became fixated on becoming a real ultimate girl. This could only be achieved by defeating the other dolls and absorbing their Rosa Mystica with these challenges known as the Alice Game. This was a struggle between the various dolls who killed one another for their Rosa Mystica with the ultimate victor becoming Alice who was considered the ultimate girl. The winner of the Alice Game would then have the opportunity to meet their "Father". They operated for decades and had different masters during their existence in the world. Mankind at large knew of them according to records but it was believed that none of the dolls had been encountered and some even doubted their existence. Even organizations such as the Doll Lovers Society believed that the Rozen Maidens were fictional or not true creations. Despite this being the case, the dolls operated within the world where they found mediums that powered their abilities. A German writer imparted his knowledge of the Rozen Maidens in a piece of literature that managed to survive the decades.
Overview
A Rozen Maiden were small dolls that were dressed as ladies and were not actual toys but rather living beings animated by Rosa Mystica energy. The dolls skin were noted for being so lifelike that it resembled human skin and their bodies felt warm to the touch. When inactive, they needed a human to 'wind' them up through the use of a key that was placed on the back to awaken them. Once winded up, they were awake but needed to be kept wound up otherwise they slowly enter into an endless sleep and incapable of interacting with the world around them. When winding down, the balls in their joints began to slow down with the doll going to sleep. Normally, they slept within a briefcase that acted as their home and where they kept a number of their personal items. This case was essential to the Rozen Maiden who need to sleep within them at night in order to recuperate themselves and deprivation of such sleep slowly harmed the doll. Each doll also had their own powers that specialized in different fields such as gardening and tending to plants which equably allowed them to look after the 'tree' within the mind of a human. Such dolls had the ability to tap into dreams and go to Yggdrassil the world tree that was a central tree linking the dreams of all humans. Similar to individuals, the different Rozen Maidens had varying degrees of personalities and traits. One force that the living dolls could summon were the Zeitgeist that were artificial spirits that served them. In addition, Rozen Maidens had access to their own personal dimension known as the N-Field that reflected their personality and was where their power was strongest.
Each doll was empowered by a mystical energy force known as Rosa Mystica. This power was not fully available to them until the doll found a medium. These mediums were normally humans that had willingly accepted to becoming a servant to the Rozen Maiden. Formally accepting the role also required the medium to kiss the red ring of the doll which led to a magical counterpart being formed on the hand of the medium. The bond between the two was permanent unless willingly relinquished by the Rozen Maiden. Through a covenant with a medium, the doll had greater access to her powers and able to conduct various acts of magic. This came at the cost of the life energy of the medium and could potentially lead to the death of the medium if too much power was employed. On some occasions, the excess use of the medium power can lead to the link between the Rozen maiden and the master being severed. This can lead to the ring disappearing along with the dolls unless the medium gained new energy through life experiences. When separated from the medium, a Rozen Maiden had access to only half of their power and could only function for thirty minutes away from the servant. Multiple dolls were capable of sharing a single human to serve as a medium and tapping into the power the host generated for them.
As part of the Alice Game, they were required to battle one another with the defeated party relinquishing their Rosa Mystica to the victor. This act turned the defeated into a powerless ordinary lifeless doll whilst the victor was further empowered and closer to becoming like Alice. One of the rules provided by "Father" was for Rozen Maidens to never harm a human though some of the dolls ignored this law. An element that the dolls greatly feared was being damaged and broken as this meant that they could never become perfect like Alice. This was because they saw imperfection as a horrifying state for Rozen Maidens as none would desire them for defects. Thus, calling another doll junk or threatening to turn them into junk was seen as an insult.
