In Thor, the character made an appearance in a supporting role where he was played by actor Idris Elba. He was Asgardian watcher that stood at his observatory and controlled the Bifrost Bridge. Despite his skill, he did not perceive a group of Frost Giants entering into Asgard and making their way to Odin's vaults. This chain of events led to Thor, Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three asking Heimdall to keep their departure to Jotunheim a secret as they sought retribution. When Thor was banished, Odin entered into the Odinsleep leading to Loki placing himelf on the throne with Heimdall forcibly and reluctantly accepting him as his ruler. However, he observed a liberal interpretation of Loki's orders and did not report when Sif along with the Warriors Three went to Midgard to warn Thor. As a result of his actions, Loki dismissed Heimdall from his service thus releasing him from his vows to the throne and allowing him to strike at Loki. Loki in turn used the Casket of Ancient Winters to freeze the watcher of the Bifrost Bridge. He was freed when Thor returned and defeated his adopted brother but their battle had damaged the Rainbow Bridge. Thor stood with Heimdall asking if the link with Earth was forever severed with the watcher showing that it was regenerating. The Odinson later asked what Jan Foster was doing to which Heimdall chuckled stating that she was still looking for Thor.
