Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events.

During the 1880's, the leaders of the newly established Gotham City had proposals to establish a prison on Blackgate Isle. (All-Star Western v3 #3)

  • Blackgate Penitentiary was created by Peter Milligan and Jim Aparo where it made its first appearance in Detective Comics v1 #629 (May, 1991).

Television

  • In Gotham, Blackgate was referred to in the live-action series. In the episode "Mad Grey Dawn", a framed Detective James Gordon was sentenced to Blackgate prison for the murder for Theo Galavan.

Films

  • In The Dark Knight Rises, Blackgate Penitentiary appeared in the live-action film of the Dark Knight Trilogy. After Bane took over Gotham City, he blew up the gates of Blackgate releasing all the prisoners bringing anarchy to the city.
