Biography
Cartaphilus (カルタフィルス Karutafirusu) was a male human that lived thousands of years ago where he was present at the execution of Jesus Christ. It was said that long ago that God's Son had cast an immortal curse on him due to his mockery at the time of the Crucifixion with it said that this curse was to last until Judgement Day. This resulted in his body being made immortal but subject to constant pain and decay that left him in agony. He remained in this state where one day he became buried underneath some soil where he cried out repeatedly for someone to save him. At the time, a grave digger was present named Joseph who heard the cry and dug him out. He noticed the heavily wounded man and took him to his home where he helped put bandages around his body. Cartaphilus once more asked for help with Joseph gladly deciding to aid him and making him better. Despite his ministrations, Cartaphilus did not recover further and Joseph's poor reputation in his village caused people to lash out at him as they came to suspect him of foul magic. This resulted in a frustrated Joseph deciding that once Cartaphilus getting better that they would leave together for another town. However, this never came to pass as the curse of Cartaphilus meant he would never get better thus preventing Joseph from leaving the town that came to hate him. An angry Joseph determined that the reason Cartaphilus did not get better was because he was an immortal. In an effort to still help him, he offered his own life to be merged with Cartaphilus in the belief that the two could find a happiness together elsewhere. As a result, Cartaphilus merged with Joseph where he came to reside in his body and leading to the curse affecting him as well. This, in turn, led to him experiencing the constant agony that impacted his decaying body but being unable to die due to the curse of immortality which drove him slowly insane. He came to slowly forget much of his past and considered himself Joseph yet was plagued by the actions of Cartaphilus. Over time, he came to be regarded as an alchemist and a dangerous figure in history.
