History

Origin

The Terran Confederation was an interstellar government formed by humanity and was centred on Earth.

Kilrathi War

In 2629.105, a Terran ship called the Iason encountered a spacecraft of unknown origin. The human vessels commander Jedora Andropolos transmitted a wide-band non-verbal greeting and waited a response. However, the unidentified ship in less than twenty minutes proceeded to open fire with full lasers and destroyed the Iason along with its crew. The Confederation deep space tracking systems later managed to determine that the alien craft planet of origin was Kilrah.

By the next year, the Confederation Assembly made attempts at holding negotiations with the Kilrathi High Command but all such overtures were rejected. Despite this response, Confed formed a non-aggression policy towards the Kilrathi in an attempt to maintain falling relations but promised military action if further raids against their colonies and vessels were not stopped. These warnings were similarly ignored by the Kilrathi who instead began numerous raids against Confederation ships between the years 2629 and 2634. This culminated in 2364 when the Kilrathi attacked and destroyed the civilian transport Anna Magdalena that was carrying orphans to the planet Dieno with all occupants killed in the assault. As a result, the Confederation Assembly officially declared a state of warfare against the Kilrathi Empire on the 5th of July 2634 leading to the official start of the Kilrathi War.

In 2654.080, the CIAI's probes had discovered contact with a new alien race that were known as the Double Helix who were sentient carbon-based arthropods and possessed space travel capabilities.

Overview

Organization

In appearance, the Terran Confederation was a representative democracy organized on the federal system. Government was held within the Terran Confederation Congress that decided on policy and large scale actions. The Confederation government was headed by an elected President. In an event where the President was infirm, resigns, or is otherwise incapable of fulfilling the duties of the office, then they were replaced by the Vice President. One agency within the government was Terran Intelligence Agency that was responsible for managing various Covert Ops with Special Operations teams deployed on missions.

The Terran Confederation Military was divided into four branches: the Army, Marines, Navy, and Space Forces. Each branch has a representative on the Confederation military's governing council, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, based on Earth with its commander-in-chief being the President. Military control over the naval was achieved by the Confederation High Command. Overall strategic and military activity over a sector of space was overseen by the Confederate Sector Command. The Terran Confederation Service Organization (TCSO) was a group within it that was responsible for improving morale within the military. The fleet was referred to as the Terran Confederation Navy. A specialist branch within it was the Special Operations Division that was responsible for conducting covert operations and aimed to defend mankind's interests.

The Confederation Oath of Service was:

  • I am the heart of the Confederation.
  • A servant of peace...
  • A deliverer of freedom...
  • A guardian of worlds...
  • As I pave the road to victory
  • I shall not fear the enemy
  • For he cannot conquer justice.
  • As I light the righteous fire of peace
  • I shall hold life sacred
  • For it is my duty to rise against evil.

A body that was later established was the Strategic Readiness Agency (SRA) with it being charged with the protection of the frontier.

One body within the Confederation was the Committee for Interaction with Alien Intelligences (CIAI) that sent out probes and sought contact with extraterrestrial species. Another organization within their government was the World Science Federation. It once operated a secret genetic engineering initiative called the Genetic Enhancement Program that was tasked with creating the perfect warrior though it was believed that the project was shutdown.

Information was distributed through the Terran News Network that conducted Holo-Vid interviews.

Scientific services at Confed was a multi-service office where they recruited Navy researchers, Marine intelligence analysts, Space Service scout pilots and engineers and techs from all services.

The Confederation was divided into eight sectors with these being Avalon, Gemini, Hawking, Sol, Vega, Argent, Epsilon and Enigma with each being further subdivided into four quadrants.

Technology

Weaponry developed by the Confederation included:

  • Mass Drivers : a long-range gun that used linear accelerator that fired projectiles of metallic mass at a target. They required less energy per shot than most blasters and had a relatively fast re-fire rate.
  • Phase-Transit Cannon : these cannons were refined from a similar weapon found from a Kilrathi Dreadnought that was responsible for destroying the Goddard Colony in 2654. Phase-transit cannons were capable of bypassing shields and destroying any ship with a single shot. This led to them forming the keel of the Terran Confederation-class dreadnoughts as they were too large to be mounted on any other ship in the Confederation Navy. Continued problems with the weapon eventually led to its retirement in late 2665.

The Confederation Navy wielded a number of different class of fighters that included the:

  • Longbow :
  • Excalibur :

Among the classes of capital ships used by the Confederation included:

  • Caernaven-class frigate :
  • Southampton-class destroyer :
  • Tallahassee-class cruiser :
  • Yorktown-class light carrier :
  • Concordia-class fleet carrier :
  • Vesuvius-class heavy carrier : a fleet carrier that entered service with the Terran Confederation Navy in 2673.
  • Midway-class heavy carrier : a fleet carrier designed to be the mainstay of the Confederation fleet capable of housing battle commanders and serving as a command-and-control center for strategic planning as well as a communications hub for the smaller ships serving in support of it. They were noted for being as large as the average battleship and designed to be economically more feasible to build. Midway-class megacarriers were designed to carry their own crew consisting of three full fighter squadrons (252 ships total), and a 1,500-man Marine Expeditionary Unit, for a total complement of up to 6000 personnel. Their mission profile was to effectively deal with any local crisis ranging from ground-based, orbital or deep-space with minimal escort an also serve as the center of a strike force or carrier group in the event of actual war. These ships were 1,830 meters in length, with a displacement of 200,000 tonnes with them not being heavily armored for a ship of their size but their shield generators were the equal of those found on most wartime top-security permanent installations, making these a literal flying fortress. In addition to its fighters complement, its offensive capabilities included laser turrets and missile stations, for antifighter defense, plus medium ion cannon turrets for slugfests against other cap ships. Midway heavy carriers used a new arterial concept of fighter storage where craft were stored along an arterial launch corridor that runs the full length of the ship, with six launch bays leading to space with ships capable of being launched from any bay. This was actually a notable design weakness in the ship as a suicide run could potentially take out the entire fighter complement within the hanger bay.
  • Behemoth-Class Dreadnought :

A superweapon secretly developed by the Terrans was the Y22A-1 Temblor Bomb that was a warhead capable of destroying a planet.

News of his treason was kept hidden by the Confederation as they wanted to maintain his image as a hero to its citizens.
