Biography

Origin

Uryū Ishida in Bleach v1 #4.

Uryū Ishida (Japanese: 石田 雨竜, Hepburn: Ishida Uryū) was a male member of the Quincy race born as the son of Ryūken Ishida (石田竜弦, Ishida Ryūken) and Kanae Katagiri. Originally, his father was set to marry another Echt Quincy named Masaki Kurosaki (黒崎 真咲, Kurosaki Masaki) that was to be arranged by his mother. However, he ended up marrying a maid that served the family with this being Kanae who bore him a son that they named Uryū Ishida.

When he was fairly young, it was known that his grandfather came to be killed right in front of Uryū where he was unable to do anything to save him.

Agent of the Shinigami

He attended a live broadcast of Don Kanonji's TV program in Karakura Town where he saw the celebrity attempt to exorcise an earth-bound Plus by placing his staff inside the partially open hole in its chest. Uryū was about to intervene when Ichigo vaulted over the barrier. Ishida later observed Ichigo Kurosaki in his Shinigami form whilst walking down a street. He came to save a Plus soul from a Hollow, and goes to a location where he can see the Plus. He then spots Ichigo again as Ichigo performs a Soul Burial on the Plus. Later in school, he is present when Ichigo is dragged off by Rukia Kuchiki to defeat a Hollow. However, Uryū defeats this Hollow before them, and when Rukia and Ichigo get there they begin arguing with each other. Uryū approaches them and states that a Hollow is here - just before Rukia gets a message signaling that a Hollow has arrived. After Ichigo asks Rukia which way the Hollow is, Uryū mocks him for not being able to sense something as simple as that, and tells him he should not even call himself a Shinigami. Uryū then uses his Quincy bow, Kojaku, and fires an arrow from it, killing the Hollow. Ichigo asks him what he is, and Uryū introduces himself, stating that he is a Quincy and that he hates Shinigami. Ichigo is confused by this statement, and Uryū tells him that he hates him for being a Shinigami. At school, Michiru Ogawa hands him a ripped doll to fix. He then takes a sewing set out and easily (but with great drama) repairs the broken doll. As he heads home, he spots Ichigo following him. He mocks Ichigo for not being able to hide his spiritual pressure, and for his inability to sense others with high spiritual pressure. He tells Ichigo that since the day he entered school, he knew of his high spiritual pressure, when he became a Shinigami, and even Rukia's true identity. Uryū then draws out something called Reiraku, and states that it is something that compresses and visualizes the spiritual aura in the atmosphere. He again mocks Ichigo's ignorance, and, grabbing hold of Ichigo's Reiraku, points out that the Reiraku of Shinigami are colored red. He then tells him that he is a Quincy, and that he holds the power to kill Hollows. He asks Ichigo to fight him to show the difference in their strength.

chigo tells him the idea of competing against him is stupid, as he has nothing to do with his grudge against the Shinigami. However, Uryū provokes him by stating that he is only a temporary Shinigami who cannot even do anything without Rukia around.[24] Ichigo tells him that he will give this competition a shot and enters his Shinigami form, with Kon going into his Human body. He asks Uryū for the rules of this fight. Uryū takes some Hollow bait out and states that he is going to bring Hollows into the town. He declares that whoever kills the most Hollows within twenty-four hours is the winner. However, Ichigo protests against this idea, as the people in town will be put in danger, but Uryū tells him that caring for others is unnecessary, and that he should be confident enough to save them all. Hollows begin breaking into Karakura Town, and Uryū shoots the first one down. As he is doing this, Ichigo grabs him and tells him to bring the town back to normal. However, Uryū states that it is too late, and that instead of focusing on him, he should be focusing on the Hollows so he can save as many people as possible. He tells him that Hollows have a tendency to go after people with high spiritual pressure, and Ichigo realizes his family is in danger. He immediately runs off to save his family, missing what Uryū tries to tell him as he leaves. Uryū begins shooting Hollows from the high vantage point of a bridge, reaching up to eleven kills. After killing many Hollows, Uryū's shots begin to get weaker, and he realizes that the numbers should not be this high. He decides not to complain and remembers his mentor, telling him he has not made any mistakes and that he will avenge him.

Returning to school the next day, Uryū's injuries came to attract the attention of his classmates. Afterwards, Ichigo came to invite him to join his group for lunch. At first, Uryū refused but came to change his mind upon hearing that Keigo Asano was going to treat them. Whilst there, the atmosphere was very tense with Ishida asking Ichigo on why he was invited and questioned his motivations leading to the two bickering during the meal. Later on, Uryū came to intervene when Rukia was confronted by Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki who had come to take her to the Soul Society. In this time, he cam to battle Renji but ultimately Uryū was defeated where he was left badly injured from the fight. Abarai was prepared to kill Uryū when Ichigo arrived just in time but despite Kurosaki's skill he also came to be defeated by Byakuya. Rukia came to surrender herself to her fellow shinigami in the hope that it would mean both Uryū and Ichigo wold survive leading to all three departing to the Soul Society. Uryū came to be treated by Kisuke Urahara where he expresse concern for Ichigo to Urahara before departing. The experience made Uryū come to the realization that he was not strong enough and that the only one who could save Rukia was Ichigo.

Soul Society

Looking to save Rukia, Uryū trained and equipped himself with better gear for the next time he battled against the Shinigami. In that time, he was at a secluded spot by a waterfall when he was found by Yasutora Sado, Orihime Inoue, and Yoruichi Shihōin.

Bounts

Arrancar

At Karakura Town, Uryū came to be attacked by a Menos Grande where he tried to use some Quincy equipment to defeat it but failed. The Hollow was only vanquished by the timely arrival of his father Ryūken Ishida.

Heuco Mundo

Afterwards, Uryū came to rest from his training when he was visited by Urahara. In this time, he came to learn that Orihime had been captured by Arrancar. This saw Ishida accepting Kisuke's offer in helping Ichigo rescuing her.

He attempted to stop the rampaging Ichigo but his friend in his powerful Hollow state instead attacked Uryū and injured him. This saw Orihime rushing to his side to heal his injuries whilst an attack from Ulquiorra Cifer damaged Ichigo's Hollow mask. He then fought back control of his own body where he came to apologise to his friends for what he did in that state as he prepared to battle Ulquiorra. However, the injuries sustained by Cifer were fatal and he perished from his injuries as a result. Uryū then urged Ichigo to go and help their friends whilst he assured him that under Orihime's care that he would make a full recovery.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Uryū Ishida was a bespectacled teenager of average height and slender build with chin-length black hair along with fair skin as well as blue eyes.

Typically, he often portrayed himself as a quiet and solitary person who tried hard to act cool when other people were around. His desire to be cool even extended to him wearing a mantle even though it served no purpose and also carried a spare in case his was damaged.

It was shown that he operated under a moral ethic he called the "Pride of the Quincy" and had a strong sense of justice. He tended to be very chivalrous where he said that he enacted justice on men who abused or treated women badly.

In battle, he had a tendency to not use lethal force especially if he could win without doing so. Instead, he aimed to simply incapacitate his opponent.

At Karakura High School, he came to be a member of the handicrafts club and was highly skilled at sewing. He did not mind stitching things for his friends though his sense of design saw him adding unexpected features to anything he worked on. Despite being a sewing expert, he was noted to hate buttons.

One of the reasons he hated Shinigami was over them not saving his grandfather from a Hollow.

Uryū Ishida was noted for being the son of Ryūken Ishida (石田竜弦, Ishida Ryūken) and Kanae Katagiri (片桐 叶絵, Katagiri Kanae). His father was one of the Echt (純血統 (エヒト), Ehito; German for "Real", Japanese for "Pure-Blooded"; Viz "Pure Bloods") Quincy and thus came from a bloodline consisting of pure members of their kind. He came to be a doctor in the world of the living and operated as the Director of the Karakura Hospital. Meanwhile, his mother was noted for being a Gemischt Quincy who had been a former maid in the service of the Ishida family.

His paternal grandfather was an Echt Quincy named Sōken Ishida (石田 宗弦, Ishida Sōken) who was noted to had been a kind man that Uryū had admired. His grandfather was killed right in front of Uryū when he was fairly young with him unable to do anything to protect him.

Powers and abilities

He was well-trained in both body and mind where he demonstrated substantial athletic abilities and a genius intellect. He used his intelligence to find weak points in his opponents even overcoming disadvantages he had through thinking on his feet. After graduating from medical school, he came to be a doctor and was well-versed in medicine.

Uryū was a member of the Quincy that were a special tribe of humans who could harness and utilise spiritual energy. Primarily, this involved absorbing Reishi from the atmosphere that was then combined with his own spiritual energy to form weapons. In spiritual realms, he was shown to easily gather this energy to power himself with this being shown when he was in the Soul Society and in Hueco Mundo. He was adept as sensing Hollows over a significant distance and even determine their direction. Ishida was able to manipulate spiritual energy for offensive purposes where he commonly reshaped spiritual particles into various types of bow and arrows but can also concentrate spiritual energy into the form of swords. Hollows were noted for being poisonous to Quincy.

He came to learn the Hirenkyaku (飛廉脚, Pure Flying Step; Viz "Flying Bamboo-Blind Slide") that was an advanced speed technique that was the Quincy equivalent of a shinigami flash step or an Arrancar's Sonído.

Normally, he was armed with the traditional weapon of his people which was the Quincy Cross (滅却十字 (クインシー・クロス), Kuinshī Kurosu; Japanese for "Destruction Cross") that served as the source of his power. Its power was noted to grow as Uryū grew stronger making its abilities even more powerful.

Among the equipment he had available to him included:

  • Gintō (銀筒, Silver Tubes) :
  • Seele Schneider (魂を切り裂くもの (ゼーレシュナイダー), Zēreshunaidā; German for "Soul Cutter", Japanese for "That Which Slits the Soul") :
  • Hollow Bait (対虚(ホロウ)用の撒き餌, Tai-Horōyou no Makie; lit. "Scatter-Bait for use against Hollows") : a flat round tablet tat was crushed and scattered where it could summon Hollows to the scene. They were noted for being a valuable tool in helping a Quincy exterminate low-level Hollows.
  • Gintō (銀筒, Silver Tubes) : small containers used to store Reiryoku that was used as a component for Quincy spellcasting that resembled Kidō.
  • Sanrei Glove (散霊手套, Sanrei Shutō; lit. "Spirit-Scattering Hand Envelope"; Viz "Scattered Spirits Glove") :
  • Quincy Bangle (装身具, Sōshingu; lit. "Battle Accessory") :
  • Silber Draht (ズィルバー・ドラート, Zirubā Dorāto; German for "Silver Wire") :
