Miguel O'Hara in Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1.

Miguel O'Hara

As a child, Miguel was always much more studious than his brother, Gabriel. One day their father, George O'Hara, came home, telling Miguel that he was sending him to study at Alchemax's top school. Miguel's mother, Conchata, started a loud argument with George, while Miguel tried to calm down Gabriel. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #10) Conchata told her son goodbye, as she walked him to the limo Alchemax had sent for him. Miguel was surprised to see that Tyler Stone himself was escorting him to the school, and Tyler wasted no time getting on Miguel's nerves by calling him 'Mike' When they arrived at the school, Tyler introduced Miguel to Angela Daskalakis, his future teacher. As Miguel turned to enter the school, he was drenched by water tossed from a window. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #18) At the Alchemax school, Miguel met Xina Kwan for the first time. Angela then showed him that Alchemax had salvaged much of the technology left over from the Heroic Age, which many believe to have disappeared. Miguel was less than enthused. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #19) After class, Miguel and Xina talked for a bit, before Kron Stone confronted Miguel. After Kron left, Xina told Miguel that she was going to the pool, and asked if he'd like to join her. Miguel eagerly accepted her offer. Arriving before Xina, Miguel jumped into the pool alone. As he floated along, Miguel was startled by a hand holding his head underwater. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #20) Luckily for Miguel, Xina found him floating face down, pulled him out, and rescued him by performing CPR. Later, they agreed that it was probably Kron who tried to drown Miguel. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #22) Miguel's family later came to visit him at the school, and proceeded to embarrass him. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #23) During the visit, Kron attacked Miguel, forcing the O'Hara and Stone families to pull them apart. Xina tried to console Miguel, telling him that he needed to fight back, but Miguel admitted he'd rather not fight at all. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #26) While playing soccer, Miguel outmaneuvered Kron, but Kron got back at Miguel by pantsing him. Embarrassed, Miguel ran away, but Xina followed him. She once again tried to convince him to stop being a victim. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #27) Walking down the hallway at school, Miguel heard Xina scream in the girl's locker room. Rushing in, he found Kron holding a knife to her, and he finally fought back. Finding that tennis balls weren't much of a match for a knife, Miguel tried to run, but cornered himself in the showers. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #28) Kron advanced on Miguel in the showers, but Miguel managed to knock the knife out of his hands. That did not stop Kron from using Miguel as a punching bag, but Angela arrived and broke up the fight. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #29)

Angela tried to convince Miguel to testify against Kron to get him kicked out of school, but Miguel was too scared, and ran away once again. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #30) Miguel eventually decided that walking was not getting him anywhere, and gave hitchhiking a try. A taxi pulled over and let him in, but the driver, Dash, told Miguel that he did not have to pay as long as he told him why he was running away. Dash eventually talked Miguel into standing up for himself, and Miguel returned to the school and testified against Kron. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #32) Miguel outsmarted Kron, making him confess for his crimes. Angered, Kron jumped to attack Miguel, but Tyler Stone pulled the boys apart. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #33) Miguel and Xina eavesdropped on Angela as she told Tyler Stone that Kron was expelled. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #34) Tyler Stone apologized to Miguel about Kron, and Miguel begrudgingly accepted. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #38) Years later, Xina was with Miguel when he signed the deal for his new apartment. Xina showed her tattoo to Miguel whereupon the two proceeded to sleep together. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #22) On a double-date, Gabriel introduced Miguel to his girlfriend, Dana D'Angelo. Miguel was instantly attracted to her, despite being with Xina. Xina would later find Dana naked in Miguel's room, and Miguel's only explanation was that they 'clicked'. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #37) While walking around town with Dana, Miguel bumped into his father, who was fixing a streetlight. George tried to goad his son into a fight, but Miguel simply walked away, telling him he'd dance on his grave. Despite what he said that day, when his father died, Miguel cried at his funeral. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #10) Miguel and Gabriel enjoyed the Mexican Day of the Dead festivities, where Miguel bought and wore a death's head. (2099 Unlimited v1 #9)

Spider-Man 2099

Miguel eventually becomes head of the genetics program of Alchemax, intended to create new corporation-controlled super-powered soldiers called 'corporate raiders'. He himself was specifically inspired by surviving records concerning Spider-Man and hoped to one day create a similarly powered person. But after a human test subject dies during an early experiment, Miguel tells Tyler Stone he wishes to resign from Alchemax and discontinue his genetics research. Rather than let Miguel leave, Tyler Stone tricks him into taking Rapture, an addictive drug that genetically bonds to the user. Tyler reminds Miguel that only Alchemax is allowed to legally distribute this drug, so if O'Hara does not remain with the corporation then Tyler must assume he is getting the drug from the black market and will be forced to tell the police. Not wishing to be a blackmailed addict, Miguel recalls that he entered his own genetic code into his machine's databanks during initial experiments, using it as a human DNA test sample. Intending to use this older template of his pure genetic code to write over his current biology and free himself from the Rapture, Miguel sneaks into Alchemax and uses the gene alteration machines on himself. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1)

After going to sleep, he came to think recent events were just a dream but awoke to find that his new talons had shredded his bed. He quickly determined that he gained abilities similar to a spider as a result of the tampering with the machine. Miguel then decided that he needed to use clothes made of Unstable Molecules as they were durable enough to survive his new powers whilst he was trying to get them under control. In this time, his brother came to visit where he questioned O'Hara's involvement in Alchemax's corporate raider program. It was then that Miguel spied on the corporate cyborg bounty hunter Venture who was tracking the people involved in the incident at Alchemax. Looking to throw him off the scent, O'Hara used an old costume that he tailored into a Spider-Man Suit as he went out into the field. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)

When Miguel answered the door, he was met by Tyler Stone, in addition to three Public Eye officers, including one that was overly hostile, who lifted him off of the floor to intimidate him. Tyler Stone had the officer put him down. Not knowing of Miguel’s alter ego, Tyler tried to taunt Miguel with Rapture, prompting him to imagine a scenario where he attacked Tyler and the Public Eye officers. Miguel eventually accepted his job back at Alchemax to avoid imprisonment due to Tyler thinking he obtained Rapture illegally, and learned that his co-worker Aaron Delgato was blamed for the “sabotage” of Miguel’s experiment. The next day, when Miguel was getting dressed to go to work (with his Spider-Man costume underneath) Lyla asked him that if he’s worried about the costume being discovered, why didn’t he just destroy it. Miguel responded by telling her than he couldn’t, due to the unstable molecule fabric it was made of, in addition to the fact that Spider-Man actually managed to strike fear into Tyler and Alchemax, distracting them so he’d be able to research his “condition". On his way to work, Miguel was offered a ride by his brother, Gabriel, who tried to get Miguel to hire a detective to find his current girlfriend Kasey after she was kidnapped by a mysterious man with a sword. Miguel begrudgingly agreed to do whatever he could to help. He then arrived at work, touring his newly remodeled research facility, before being told by Tyler that he believed Miguel’s former co-worker Aaron was Spider-Man. Before the two could continue their conversation however, a woman who, unbeknownst to Miguel, was Kasey, escaped a group of Public Eye officers, taking one of their guns, before taking Miguel hostage. Later, when security and law enforcement seemed to stop following Kasey and Miguel, the two realized who the other was. However, when Miguel was going to head back home, he spotted the Specialist chasing Kasey. Miguel, knowing he would feel guilty if he didn’t save Kasey, slipped into his Spider-Man costume and engaged in combat with the Specialist. However, he was easily bested by him, and the Specialist attempted to unmask Miguel. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #4)

However, Miguel had webbing under his mask to prevent unwanted removal and, while the Specialist was distracted, he slashed at the Specialist with his talons, starting another fight with him so Kasey could escape during the chaos. Knowing that he couldn’t beat the Specialist, Miguel tried to escape, but was prevented by doing so by Public Officers. Luckily for Miguel, Kasey hijacked a hover bike, which Miguel fired a webline at, managing to escape the battlefield, though the Specialist managed to grab his leg, going on for the ride. Thanks to the assistance of Kasey however, the Specialist was hit against a wall, leading to him letting go of Miguel’s leg. Not having killer instinct, Miguel caught the Specialist, carrying him to safety, only to get kicked in the chest. In a fit of rage, Miguel accidentally slit his throat, killing him. A squadron of Public Eye officers, led by a sergeant looking to avenge his son who was severely slashed by Miguel days ago, fired at Miguel (not knowing of Tyler Stone’s order not to fire due to their leader ignoring him), sending him falling down dozens of stories, into the underbelly of Nueva York dubbed Downtown. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #5)

By the time Miguel and Xina returned to Nueva York, things had seriously changed. After Doom became President of the United States 'by right of revolution', Tyler Stone was extended an invitation to join his new Cabinet as Minister of Corporate Affairs. Miguel was named by Tyler to succeed him as head of Alchemax's Research and Development department. At the same time, Doom extended an invitation to Spider-Man to join his Cabinet as Minister of Supernormal Affairs, although Miguel did not accept. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #34)

He survived by bonding with the lost Venom symbiote of the Heroic Age and became Venom 2099. As Venom, Kron kidnapped Dana D'Angelo, resulting in her accidental death at the hands of SHIELD agents. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #37) Kron was captured and uncooperative with authorities leading to Miguel paying him a visit and beating him severely until he became more 'cooperative'. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #38)

After Doom was ousted from the White House, Tyler tried to return to Alchemax and claim his old job. Miguel refused to turn control of the company back over to Tyler, even after Tyler told him he was Miguel's father. Miguel surprised both his parents by admitting he had known for a while. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #41)

Time-Displaced

In his time, tears in the fabric of time came to affect the city with animals and people from the past emerging from these rips in reality. As Spider-Man, he helped save some people before going to Alchemax headquarters as he believed them responsible for the incident. However, Tyler Stone revealed that they had been trying to protect their timeline from being erased and that something from the Heroic Age had caused the disruptions in the timeline. The Alchemax scientists believed that only Spider-Man was capable of journeying back in time to stop the danger. Against Tyler Stone's wishes, the masked vigilante went back in time otherwise he would create a paradox where he arrived to stop the Superior Spider-Man from killing Tiberius Stone who was Miguel's own grandfather. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #17) After their skirmish, they teamed-up to prevent all of time from being destroyed. During this, Miguel was on the brink of killing his grandfather Tiberius "Ty" Stone to rewrite all of the history for 2099, but stopped when he realized that killing Tiberius would destroy the entire future New York. He also realized that Tyler Stone had destroyed the time portal, stranding Miguel in the past and ushering in the beginning of a modern day Alchemax. So this inspires Miguel to masquerade as Michael O'Mara, Ty's new assistant. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #19)

Overview

Personality and attributes

After gaining his power, it was remarked that he shared a similarity to the historical Spider-Man and came to take the name Spider-Man. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)

Since his teenage years, it was said that he had a tendency of making comments in order to tear someone down. It was said that he had a habit of making fun of people with some people unaware of the fact that he was doing it to them. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #10)

It was said that he projected the qualities of a smug scientist. Miguel remarked that he was a super-genius. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1)

According to Miguel, his mother hated him as he reminded her of his father. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #10)

It was remarked that his father had been a brilliant man. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

His aptitude test scores when he was a child ranked him in the top one percentile. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #10)

In an effort to remove a drug dependency, Miguel had used genetic engineering to transform himself whereby he intended to restore himself to the state he was prior to the drug entering his system. However, the machinery was tampered with during the experiment and he became genetically altered as a result. An aspect of the transformation meant that his eyes were sensitive to bright light. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1) Among the traits he gained as a result of the spider program was heightened vision. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)

It was shown that his vision was sensitive enough to pick up certain kinds of energy waves. (Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man v1 #1)

He demonstrated a superhuman level of strength and agility along with the leaping ability of a spider. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)

As part of his transformation, he gained sharp talons on his hands and feet. These helped in his ability to climb surfaces with the ones by his feet angled differently to help support him. At first, he struggled in the control of these talons such as in one case he tore through his bedsheets by accident in his sleep. However, instinctually, the talons retracted when touching his own skin to prevent any injure to himself. This was considered a safety reflex and he determined that through concentration he could consciously retract them. Miguel that with time and practice that he could get a better control over using them. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)

With him, he had an A.I. assistant by the name of Lyla who could manifest a hologram to represent herself as a beautiful woman. Her sensors were able to gather personal bio-readings on him including accelerated heartbeat and pulse if they were above the norm which allowed her to determine if he was exerting himself. She also was aware of Miguel's normal programming parameters allowing her to know when his behaviour was behaving outside the norm of his standard pattern of domestic activities. It was shown that she also maintained his journal and could access its contents for him. He was able to have to activate Journal Mode whereby she took down his thoughts and feelings that were added into the journal. Lyla was also able to take messages and play them for Miguel with these capable of manifesting as holograms. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #1) She was noted to had 293 different appearances and personalities that she could adopt. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2) As a holographic computer agent, it was said that she did not have feelings though Lyla had said that she was able to simulate them. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #9)

After gaining his powers, he reasoned that he would have to get all his clothes made from Unstable Molecules even though this would cost him a small fortune. This was because initially his inexperience with his powers could have resulted in his clothes being easily damaged as a result. At first, the only thing he had made of UMF was a Death's Head costume that he bought during a trip to Mexico at the Day of the Dead festival. He later modified this to be his first Spider-Man Suit which was used to conceal his true identity. (Spider-Man 2099 v1 #2)
