Biography
Asura (Japanese: 阿修羅, Hepburn: Ashura) was created 800 years ago when he was made from a fragment of the Grim Reaper's soul namely that of Lord Death. He was made as a member of Death's Eight Powerful Warriors and considered the most valued of their number due to his strength and great power. Asura was gifted with a Magic Weapon named Vajra that served as his partner who assisted him in battle. However, a flaw emerged in his creation as Asura was made from a part of Death's soul that contained fear. A result of this development was that this led to a disturbed and paranoid personality manifesting in his nature. Despite Vajra's aid, Asura became more and more unstable as time went on to the point that he slaughtered a group of witches by himself. The paranoid he experience led to him having Vajra consume human souls whereupon he in turn consumed his weapon leading to his transformation into the first generation Kishin. Upon his ascension to Kishin, Death himself opposed his former comrade where he succeeded in defeating him with Asura being skinned alive with his own skin serving as a prison as he was drained of his blood. He was then sealed underneath what became Death City with Lord Death placing his essence there in order to ensure that Asura remained imprisoned for eternity. The Death Weapon Meister Academy was then established with the purpose of stopping the rise of Kishin with only a few privy to the truth that a Kishin resided underneath it.
Among the people affected by the madness wavelength was Arachne who restored herself after dispersing her spiders around the world long ago.
Eight hundred years later, Asura is revived when Eruka Frog injects a giant needle of Black Blood into the sack containing the Kishin. As a result, he beings reforming into his original form. As he forms, he is attacked by Death the Kid using the Demon Twin Guns, though they do no damage to the god and he continues regenerating. As he finishes, he is surprised to find the Frog Witch in front of him, screaming at the top of his lungs. As the witch screams herself in fear, both Kid and Free are astounded by the Kishin being surprised. Black☆Star decides to attack him with his Ultimate Move: Black☆Star Big Wave. However, the attack is ineffective and he is sent flying away from Asura with only a swipe in the air. As Kid attempts to shoot down the Kishin, he is slapped in the forehead with Asura's elastic skin, causing him to get knocked out in one hit. Asura then stretches his skin into Skin Scarves, loudly exclaiming that he is naked and needs to cover up, which he does. He then comments on how nice it must be to have muscles, before jumping into the air and flying his way out of the shrine.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Asura was shown as being a very tall, thin and pale young man. Prior to being the Kishin, he came to wear numerous long white scarves that encircled his entire neck and a large portion of his head. It was also shown that he was known by the name of Kishin Asura (鬼神阿修羅, Kishin Ashura).
As the physical embodiment of fear, Asura's behavior is extremely inconceivable; one minute he seemingly has a completely calm and cool demeanor, the next he is both maniacal and senseless. Interestingly enough, this can be seen when Asura covers his face, he tends to act erratically and is unpredictable, making him especially dangerous. However, unmasked, he is almost the opposite. He displayed a much more calm and 'sane' demeanor, even showing sarcasm.
According to his father and master, Death, Asura was a suspicious individual. Wrapping himself with a scarf and wearing five or six layers of clothes, Asura never opened his heart up to anyone nor did he ever trust anyone. Despite being the strongest of the Eight Reaper Legions, Death comments he was always afraid of something and grew to have an obsession with power, which caused him to break the rules of hunting souls outside Shinigami's List.
He claimed that he did not fear pain or death.
Powers and abilities
Asura was noted for being among the first generation of Great Old Ones (旧支配者グレート・オールド・ワン, Gurēto Ōrudo Wan) that were god-like beings. Initially, he came to serve as one of the Grim Reapers (死神, Shinigami; Yen Press Translation "Death God", "Reaper" alternatively) that were supernatural beings and true gods who presided over balance. As a result, he possessed enhanced eyesight through his Reaper Eyes (死神の目玉, Shinigami no Medama) allowing him to view in a perspective similar to HUDS. As a grim reaper, he possess a physical body that enables him to have superior endurance and mobility. As a Reaper and embodiment of fear where he was noted to possess Immortality (不死, Fushi) which meant he could not be killed by conventional means.
Being a reaper himself, Asura therefore possessed the Lines of Sanzu (ザ ライン オブ サンズ, Za Rain obu Sanzu) which were shown by the white breaks revolving around his hair, having possessed this appearance since even prior to his betrayal.
After his infusion with the Black Blood, Asura gained the ability to heal from any injury and was able to regenerate even lost limbs. The same Black Blood also gave him an empathic link with others that had it within their bodies. This served as a means through which he could gain possession of a person over time.
He was known to generate a Madness Wavelength (狂気の波長, Kyōki no hachō) due to being one of the Great Old Ones. His soul wavelength was on the level of a god and described as being "inexhaustible" where it was capable of affecting almost anyone on Earth including witches and the undead even when bloodless and sealed away. This madness wavelength that affected the world around him that brought the madness hidden within people to manifest in a person.
When he descended into madness, he devoured his weapon partner but was still able to partially regurgitate Vajra from his mouth to continue to use him as a weapon in battle. As the Kishin, he gained the power to emit his Madness of Terror with this being a perpetual residual energy known as the Madness Wavelength. This affected the sanity of others around him and threatened to turn them into mindless beasts. It warped the perception of others around him with it being based around fear and terror with those exposed driven to insanity if exposed to it for a long time. In the area around him, the madness was concentrated and produced Clowns that could spread its effects even further.
Among the techniques known to him included:
- Soul Perception (魂感知能力, Tamashii Kanchi Nōryoku) :
- Vajra (ヴァジュラ, Vajura) : Using Vajra, his Marksmanship (銃撃技, Jūgeki Waza) allowed him to discharge lasers where his aim was great enough to have shot from the surface of the Moon back to Earth, with his shot only missing on account of Free's spatial magic having saved Eruka, Kilik, and Azusa.
- Collect (回収, Kaishū) :
- Shockwave (衝撃波, Shōgekiha) :
Although a powerful entity in his own right, even Asura himself has some forms of limitations on him. Although possessing incredible abilities that make him virtually un-killable, he's not immune to being defeated. The only individual to be capable of overpowering Asura in battle is Death, with Asura fearing the former and having been once skinned alive by him
