Biography
Origin
Mikaboshi was the god of evil who fought against the Kami, who were a race of extra-dimensional beings who were worshipped as gods by the ancient Japanese. For millennia, he has fought to possess the Grasscutter sword, a sacred weapon to the Kami equal to Mjolnir among the Asgardian gods. (Thor: Blood Oath v1 #6)
Ages ago, in a conflict in the heavens between Amatsu-Mikaboshi and Zeus, the Japanese deity sought out a blacksmith who was tasked with crafting a weapon that would help him win the war. The blacksmith had similarly been seen by Zeus who made the same request with the forge creating two blades; one perfect and one flawed. Amatsu-Mikaboshi was gifted with the Grasscutter sword by the blacksmith which he used in the conflict. (Secret Warriors v1 #10)
Amatsu-Mikaboshi
Following the deaths of the gods of Asgard, Mikaboshi became bolder, and decided to launch an assault upon Olympus. (Ares v1 #1) Zeus raised up mighty warriors such as Achilles to combat Mikaboshi. Mikaboshi faced Achilles in battle, and delivered a vicious scar to his face that would not heal. When Achilles left Alexander Aaron, son of Ares, alone with the Myrmidons while he went to recruit Ares from Earth, Mikaboshi attacked the temple of Achilles and spirited Alexander away. Assuming the form of a female, Mikaboshi began to twist Alexander's feelings for his father, using drugs to help convince Alexander to hate his father, and become a god of war himself. (Ares v1 #2) Mikaboshi gave Alexander a suit of armor, and continued to drug him. (Ares v1 #3) Assuming Alexander's form, Mikaboshi tricked Zeus into lowering his guard, and drove his hands through Zeus' chest. Zeus survived the wound, but Mikaboshi continued Alexander's training, and gave him the Grasscutter sword to wield against Ares. (Ares v1 #4) The night before the final battle with Mikaboshi, Nightmare helped Ares invade Mikaboshi's dreams. Nightmare suggested they become allies, but neither Ares nor Mikaboshi had an interest to do that and turned on Nightmare while fighting each other. Mikaboshi impaled Nightmare with his claws, forcing the demon to flee back to his realm. Ares lost connection to Mikaboshi's dream and they saw each other the next day. (Chaos War: Ares v1 #1) Mikaboshi faced the armies of Olympus as they assaulted his realm, and he delivered a possibly fatal blow to Zeus. Before dying, Zeus used his magic to undo Mikaboshi's spell over Alexander. As the Kami arrived to help the Olympians, Alexander used the Grasscutter to slice Mikaboshi in half. Mikaboshi's realm was then swept over with a flood created by Neptune. (Ares v1 #5)
During the battle, he was sent alongside the Demogorge to battle the Skrullian goddess Sl'gur't. The Demogorge was killed and Mikaboshi battled the shapeshifter who took his form where he was apparently kill. Following the death of Kly'bn, the heroes fled seemingly leaving the Skrull goddess alive but it was revealed that she was the one who had actually been killed and not Mikaboshi. Amatsu-Mikaboshi took over the realm that contained all the defeated pantheons that the Skrull deities had conquered and decided to begin his own plans now that he was free from the Kami. Notes
- Amatsu-Mikaboshi was created Michael Oeming and Scott Kolins where he made his first appearance in Thor: Blood Oath #6 (February, 2006).
- The character was based off Amatsu-Mikaboshi from Japanese mythology.
- In an interview, writer Fred Van Lente wrote about him "who some see as the Japanese god of evil, but he really is a being that represents the polar opposite of the core values in the Shinto religion."
