Biography

Mary Martin

Zed met the British mage John Constantine in a London alleyway, and was instantly attracted to him. She brought John back to her apartment to show him her artwork. One of the sketches adorning Zed's wall was that of Constantine himself, even though she had only just met him. Moments after familiarizing herself with John, she assisted him in rescuing his ten-year-old niece Gemma Masters from a psychotic member of the Damnation Army.

Shortly thereafter, the demon Nergal sent his grotesque agent Ironfist the Avenger to Zed's apartment on a mission to kill Constantine. Fortunately, John's quick wit convinced the creature to destroy itself while Zed and he fled to safety. He brought her to the home of his friend Ray Monde where Zed spent the night. The following morning, Zed's father, the apparent leader of the Resurrection Crusade barged into Monde's home and abducted her. Bringing her back to the Crusaders headquarters, they prepared her for a spiritual ritual. The ritual required a virgin, but unfortunately for the Crusaders, Zed's evening with John Constantine robbed her of her "purity". She then helps stop the Fear Machine, and later assists John in finding out about his twin.

Zed later reappeared as a pagan sorceress living on the coast of Scotland, where she helps another pagan group who has recently been harassed out of England by a cabal of secret police. In this incarnation, Zed has embraced a sort of feminist, goddess worshipping spiritual inclination which plays a crucial role in Constantine's efforts to thwart another conspiracy, this time by a group of Masonic demon-worshippers who have infiltrated the upper echelons of the British government.

In Constantine, Zed appeared in the setting of the live-action television series where she was portrayed by actress Angélica Celaya. Zed has a very dark past. Before meeting John Constantine, Zed had dreams and visions about him for months and would constantly draw portraits of him in her apartment. Her real name is Mary. Her father is the leader of a cult called "the Resurrection Crusade" who believe that her visions are essentials for their future. Because of that she spend most of her childhood locked up in a room. She's now on the run from her father and his cult. Zed bumps into John in Heddwich, Pennsylvania while the latter is investigating an unusual death. Zed is surprised to finally meet John, and explains how she's been having dreams about him.. John accuses her of being a stalker, observing him from afar. He manages to slip away, however, Zed manages to steal his wallet. Later, Zed breaks into John's hotel room. When John arrives, Zed further explains her situation, she believes that it was destiny that brought them both together. She tells him that she has visions and even feelings that she cannot control. John doesn't believe her, so she channels the guilt and pain that he has through her. John deduces her ability as clairsentience, and puts it to the test. John puts the stolen slurry in her hand and she sees visions of Lannis' shower, and a tall crucifix. She is eventually overwhelmed, and John escapes.
