Biography
Victor Chase Stein was a male human born the son of Victor Stein and his wife Janet Stein. (Runaways v1 #2)
The couple made their fortune through their inventions such as making a tool that removed stickers from CDs. (Runaways v1 #4) Unknown to Chase, his parents operated as scientists and engineers for the Pride where they created for them various weapons, tech and transport. (Runaways v1 #2) It was noted that he was accidentally conceived by his parents. This led to the other members of the Pride decided to also have children in order to pass on their inheritance from the Gibborim to their children. (Runaways v1 #13)
During Chase's childhood, a business associate in the Los Angeles crime scene called Creepy Uncle Eli often visited. When his parents finally cut off ties with him, Eli came into Chase's room as a threat to his parents. (Daken: Dark Wolverine v1 #18) For his sixteenth birthday, Chase asked for a plain white van because he wanted anonymity and the secret desire to just disappear one day. (Runaways v1 #2)
Along with Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, and Gertrude Yorkes, Chase witnessed his parents and the Pride sacrifice Destiny Gonzales for the Ritual of Blood. (Runaways v1 #1) Chase joined the group in the mass ransack to escape from their respective homes. While going through Chase's parents' homes, he discovers that his parents are mad scientists, with many technological advances. (Runaways v1 #2)
While searching for evidence, Chase commandeered some of the weapons from his father's workshop including the Fistigons and X-Ray Specs. (Runaways v1 #4)
After rescuing Molly and narrowly escaping their parents, Chase suggested the group take refuge in The Hostel. Chase received the codename "Talkback" from Gert's sarcastic remark about his habit of talking back. (Runaways v1 #6)
Chase's insecurity and stubbornness often put him at odds with the other Runaways, but particularly with Gert. (Runaways v1 #8) As the only Runaway with a driver's license, Chase transported the team in his unmarked white van. (Runaways v1 #3)

Personality and attributes
He was portrayed as being a free, reckless spirit, shown when he purposely repeatedly crashes the Leapfrog. (Runaways v1 #13)
Similar to the other Runaways, he was the child of evil villains with special abilities where in Chase's case his parents were mad scientists. (Runaways v1 #1) His parents were noted to had made their fortune through their inventions. (Runaways v1 #4) Even Tony Stark was impressed with the work of these world-renowned brilliant scientists and inventors. (Iron Man: Legacy v1 #10)
Although Janet was not physically abusive to her son, she was emotionally abusive. At age 10, Chase won a trophy for the little league MVP but his mother Janet made him throw it away, promising that they would save awards for 'important' things. (Avengers Arena v1 #4)
He had an uncle named Hunter Stein who was the brother of Victor Stein. (Runaways v3 #11) Hunter ran Track Consolidated Construction and Containment, which designed facilities to contain superpowered people who were either criminals or unable to control their abilities. Hunter would frequently visit his brother and the two would argue. (Runaways v3 #12)
Powers and abilities
As the eldest of the Runaways, he was the only one with a drivers license. (Runaways v1 #3)
Chase stole telescopic X-ray goggles and the 'Fistigons from his parents' secret laboratory. The X-ray goggles allowed Chase to see through clothing, walls, and even through miles of rock. The Fistigons were metal gauntlets with built-in flamethrowers. The gloves allowed the wearer to mentally shape the produced flame into any form the wearer desired. (Runaways v1 #4) Before the final fight with their parents, Chase nearly drowned and was too weak to go on. He gave the Fistigons and X-ray goggles to Alex, who subsequently betrayed the team to their parents. Nico used the Staff of One to magically destroy the gauntlets while he was still wearing them. (Runaways v1 #17) Meanwhile, the X-ray goggles were incinerated with Alex by the Gibborim. (Runaways v2 #23)
Before Gert's death, she transferred telepathic control of Old Lace to Chase. (Runaways v2 #18) Thus, he shared an empathic link with the dinosaur, so both suffer from one another's injuries and benefit when the other heals. Chase and Old Lace's minds are also directly connected so the dinosaur can telepathically communicate thoughts and feelings to her master. (Runaways v2 #18) Old Lace is engineered to follow Chase's every mental command though she can express dissatisfaction; to date, Old Lace has directly disobeyed only one of Chase's orders and was able to only with Karolina's help. (Runaways v2 #23)
Chase has also used Nico's Staff of One against Nico. (Runaways v2 #23)
Later on, Chase would come to make use of a time machine to travel through time. He returned shortly afterward with newly built Fistigons of his own design; to protect the team from the Yorkes' by conjuring fire and electricity to defeat them. And then protects the Leapfrog from a barrage of missiles by using the Fistigons to shoot out missiles of their own. (Runaways v2 #30)
At one point, Chase obtained Darkhawk's powers, as the original owner was separated from the amulet. After escaping the arena, Chase returned the amulet to its original owner. (Avengers Arena v1 #18)
