Heidi Schmidt was an Allied agent of German birth. She worked undercover as a barmaid at the Zum Wilden Hirsch, where she often flirted with Major von Hapen. Major John Smith involved her in his plan to learn the names of all of the Nazi spies in Britain. To this end, she used her position in the village and her connection to von Hapen to persuade the smitten Gestapo major to give her "cousin" Maria Schenck, actually British agent Mary Ellison, a job at the Schloss Adler. She later escaped to Oberhausen Airfield along with Smith, Mary, Lieutenant Morris Schaffer and Cartwright Jones, and escaped Germany with them.

Comments

In the novel, "Heidi Schmidt" is just an alias used by British undercover agent Ethel. However, in the film, Heidi appears to be her real name and she appears to be of genuine Germanic origin.
