Biography
Kearson DeWitt
According to DeWitt, his father had been a brilliant engineer who had been ignored and ridiculed with him ultimately dying heartbroken, penniless and his designs never realised. Later on, Kearson would come to believe that Anthony Stark had stolen the elder DeWitt's designs which were used in the construction of the Iron Man Armor. As a result, he came to swear revenge against both Tony Stark and his bodyguard Iron Man. (Iron Man Annual v1 #13) Later on, Stark came to find himself paralysed after being shot in the spine by Kathy Dare. It was then that DeWitt came upon the idea of taking control of Stark's nervous system by implanting a chip in Tony's spine by way of an experimental surgery. This chip granted Stark the ability to walk but it allowed Kearson to control his every movement. He then approached the billionaire heads of the Marrs Corporation namely Desmond Marrs and Phoebe Marrs where they agreed to fund his project. It was then that he established a site that would allow him to transmit and monitor the activity of the chip through his bio-replicant synapse override system. However, an aspect of this system was that it required living operators to monitor and run it leading to DeWitt hiring staff to manage the facility. (Iron Man v1 #260)
Stark eventually began to feel the effects of the chip after he noticed an odd pain from his lower back. (Iron Man v1 #256) DeWitt and his scientists would measure the results they received from Stark's body. It was then that Professor Clemens expressed regret over them not being able to see through Tony Stark's eyes. Despite that, Kearson was content with the measure of power he maintained over his hated foe. (Iron Man v1 #258) DeWitt would later control Stark's nervous system to the point that he made Tony sleep for 3 days all the while his agent Cassandra watched over him. Stark would later wake up in San Francisco in a disoriented state with Cassandra reporting this to her employer. (Iron Man v1 #259) Afterwards, monitoring by Dr. Calvin indicated that Tony Stark was going through intense physical activity but they had no means of establishing without a visual setting. This led to Kearson chiding the doctor for not having a means of spying on Stark through the chip. It was then that Desmond and Phoebe Marrs had arrived in order to check their investment on this venture. Desmond had demanded to see the physical results of the project along with the hope that exerting too much control over Stark might harm him. (Iron Man v1 #260) He would then see Stark being successfully controlled Tony with Desmond looking to reassert his own control over DeWitt. This would see Desmond reminding DeWitt who was in charge with Phoebe commenting that Stark was a worthy opponent. In response, Desmond Marrs agreed to let Kearson continue his project and left the lab. DeWitt then attempted to flirt with Phoebee Marrs but she quickly left leaving Kearson angry. (Iron Man v1 #261)
In order to see Stark, Dewitt hired Stark's security man, Cartwright, to pipe security footage of Stark over to him. While viewing Stark, his team took over Stark's body and caused Stark to slowly began walking through his plant until Jim Rhodes tried to stop him. Dewitt ordered his men to kill Rhodes, through Stark, and Stark began fighting with Rhodes involuntarily. Rhodes got in a lucky punch and knocked Stark unconscious, causing Dewitt's men to lose control. Rhodes then hid Stark and strapped him down so that Dewitt could not find Stark on the cameras to cause him to be able to watch where Stark was moving. Dewitt grew angry at his aides, including Samuelson and Atkins. They soon reported that Stark was moving, somehow defying the control chip. (Iron Man v1 #262) After three hours, Dewitt's aides were still not able to reason how Stark was defying their control. Dewitt threatened his aides, and reminded them of what the Marrs would do to them as well. Aside from briefly regaining control over Stark's right arm, they had no success. (Iron Man v1 #263) When Stark, still defying their control, appeared on television, Dewitt was furious until Matheson pointed out it may be a trick. Dewitt ordered his aides, including Simpson, back to their stations. (Iron Man v1 #264) Dewitt viewed footage of Iron Man on television, wondering what Stark's game plan was. He ordered his men to restore control of Stark's nervous system to Stark, which caused Stark to experience terrible pain due to neuro-feedback. Rhodes managed to rein Stark as Iron Man in while a Marrs Corporation helicopter watched. Stark finally pieced together Marrs Corp's involvement in his troubles and stormed Dewitt's headquarters as Iron Man, scattering Dewitt's men and destroying his equipment. Dewitt armored up and attacked Iron Man with a blast. Realizing at some point that Stark was Iron Man, Dewitt again seized control of Stark's nervous system and imposed another violent neuro-feedback shock on Stark. (Iron Man v1 #265)
