Biography

Origin

Yara Flor in Future State: Wonder Woman v1 #1.

Yara Flor was a female member of the Amazons born as the daughter of Aella of Themyscira who had left her home island in an adventure across the world. During her travels, she came to Brazil where she fell in love with a local deity where she became pregnant with his child that she named Yara Flor. Both her and her mother were then taken in by a local tribe of Amazons known as the Esquecida. (Wonder Girl v3 #4)

Eventually, she grew tired of her aunt's lack of explanation about her past and decided to go to Brazil herself to experience her heritage. (Wonder Girl v3 #1) She booked a flight on North American Airlines where she was part of a tour group that took her to Rio de Janeiro. Whilst there, she responded to an incident where a car crash occurred where she helped one of the drivers to safety from the overturned vehicle before it exploded. (Wonder Girl v3 #1)

Trial of the Amazons

Afterwards, Yara came to return with Potira to Akahim where she earned a place within the Esquecida tribe. One day, a giant boar came to attack the rain forest with it originally believed to had been sent from Mount Olympus but the oracle Anahi had revealed that the creature actually escaped from Doom's Doorway on Themyscira. It was decided that the Esquecida were to sent representatives to Themyscira but Queen Goboymila was too ill to travel and thus Potira was invested power to act as queen in her stead. She was told to take Yara with her as well due to her mother being originally from Themyscira. (Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl v1 #1)

During the contest, the arena came to collapse which forced Yara, Donna and Phillupus to work together in order to find a way to escape the tunnels. They eventually came across Echidna and were forced to battle the monster where they defeated her by working together. However, they were forced to leave Diana behind as the cave began to collapse on them. (Wonder Woman v1 #786) The group then went to warn the Amazons that Chaos had escaped where they came to find Diana who was stunned to see that Doom's Doorway was breaking open. (Trial of the Amazons: Wonder Girl v1 #2)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Though she was born in Brazil, she had few memories of it as she was only young when she was there and instead was raised by her aunt in Idaho. (Wonder Girl v3 #1) As she grew up, she lived with her Aunt Renata and Uncle Brian where she spoke to the former in American sign language. Yara often had arguments with her aunt about her life back in Brazil. (Infinite Frontier v1 #0)

Powers and abilities

Yara Flor was an Amazon with her mother having been one whilst her father was a local deity. (Wonder Girl v3 #4)

It was shown that she possessed a level of superhuman strength that was greater than ordinary Amazons. (Wonder Girl v3 #2)

Yara was shown as being multilingual with her able to speak Brazilian Portuguese, English and American Sign Language. (Infinite Frontier v1 #0) She later came to receive an extensive education under the Olympian god Eros. (Wonder Girl v3 #4)

She was shown to wield a golden Boleadoras in combat that allowed her to easy capture enemies. (Future State: Wonder Woman v1 #1)

Notes

  • Yara Flor was created by Joëlle Jones, Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette where she made her first appearance in Dark Nights: Death Metal v1 #7 (March, 2021).
  • On Twitter, Jones said that the characters look was inspired by Brazilian indigenous model Suyane Moreira.
  • In an interview on IGN, editor Jamie S. Rich wrote, "We will eventually discover that there are connections to the other tribes of the Amazons that we have established. Yara does have some connection to the Amazons, and part of what we'll discover in her origin is what activates her position, what makes her Wonder Woman at this time. She's from Brazil, but was an immigrant to America. There's also that element of her story. Even though we'll see her currently active as Wonder Woman, eventually we'll learn what her origin is - partially her figuring out what that means, where she's from, why this is her, how she relates to Diana, how she relates to the other Amazons. Joelle was looking at Yara as - she is new to this. Her humanity is still very much intact and very much important. From a reader standpoint, what does that mean for me when I look at this character? Diana Prince is a goddess, so she's always a bit above us. This is a chance to sort of get back to some of the early roots of Wonder Woman where Diana was trying to be human and trying to learn how to be human. Now we're going the opposite way - how does a human learn how to be a goddess?"

Alternate Versions

  • In Future State: Wonder Woman v1 #1 (2021), the character made their first appearance in the setting of the alternate reality of Future State. After slaying a hydra, she forced the forest guardian spirit Caipora to help her to travel into the Underworld in order to rescue one of her Themysciran sisters from the clutches of Hades, the Greek god of the dead.
