Breen

The Breen are a species that feature in Star Trek.

History

The Breen were an alien race that were native to the Alpha Quadrant in the galaxy.

In the reign of Klingon Chancellor Mog'wa in the Second Empire, a fleet of ships were dispatched into Breen space to conquer their homeworld but none of them returned. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part)

Breen privateers during the 24th century often conducted indiscriminate raids against other Alpha Quadrant species. This included the Breen attack and capture of a Cardassian Central Command vessel, the Ravinok, in 2366. The survivors of that attack were used for slave labor in Breen-operated dilithium mines on Dozaria. (Episode: Indiscretion) The Federation had limited knowledge of the Breen, however, and was aware of Breen outposts located in Sector 97 in 2368. That same year, Starfleet feared the Breen might have attacked the science vessel SS Vico there. (Episode: Hero Worship) In 2370, the Breen participated in a palio held at Federation space station Deep Space 3, during which the Ferengi attempted to bribe a Breen pilot into deliberately losing the race. (Episode: Interface)

In 2372, the Breen captors on Dozaria were located by Kira Nerys and Gul Dukat. Dukat stated that he didn't approve of what the Breen were doing, by employing the survivors of the Ravinok as slaves but did "admire their ingenuity." The Breen guards were ambushed by him and Kira, so that they could free one of the Breen's prisoners: Dukat's daughter, Tora Ziyal. (Episode: Indiscretion) Later that year, Breen privateers raided the Bajoran colony of Free Haven; they were, however, successfully driven away by the USS Defiant. (Episode: To the Death)

During the Dominion War, a Breen starship heading to a secret rendezvous where it encountered Starfleet officers Worf and Ezri Dax on a planet in the Goralis system in 2375. The stranded officers were stunned and taken captive by the Breen who continued their journey. (Episode: Penumbra) This rendezvous consisted of a meeting with the Dominion that forged the official alliance between their two empires. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part)

Overview

It was said that no one had ever seen the face of a Breen beneath their helmets or lived to tell the tale. Some believed that they were perhaps a furred covered species as their homeworld was said to be quite cold. When speaking, Breen spoke in a unintelligible electronic sound that could not always be understood by other species. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part) It was noted that their species did not possess blood or a liquid circulatory system. (Episode: In Purgatory's Shadow) They were among the races whose thoughts and emotions could not be detected by empathic species such as Betazoids. (Episode: The Loss) Pregnancy at a young age was a noted occurrence among the Breen. (Episode: Elogium)

The Breen were said to be a dangerous people who did not tolerate incursions into their space. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part) They were considered one of the most warlike species known to the Federation. (Episode: Elogium) Romulan contact with the Breen led to them coining the saying: "Never turn your back on a Breen." (DS9: "By Inferno's Light")

Algae paste was a food that they were known to serve prisoners. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part)

Their handheld weapons were able to discharge an energy blast that could stun targets. (Episode: Penumbra) Against prisoners, they sometimes used stun prods designed to incapacitate targets and used cortical implants to probe captive memories. (Episode: 'Til Death Do Us Part) Breen vessels were noted for having organic components to them. (Episode: Scorpion, Part 1) Type-3 disruptors were one armament that was present within their arsenal. (Movie: Generations) Breen starships were shown to be armed with disruptor-type weapons and were equipped with cloaking devices. (Episode: Hero Worship) A more unique kind of weapon in their armaments was an energy dampening weapon that when fired shut down all systems on enemy vessels until modifications were used to counter them. (Episode: The Changing Face of Evil)

• The non-canonical novel Legends of the Ferengi stated that the Ferengi were sold warp technology from a figure they called "the Masked Breen" in exchange they gave the Breen both poles of Ferenginar along with several comets and a frozen moon.

According to the novel, the Breen were revealed to be comprised of several different species, with the term 'Breen' being the name of their society, rather than a single species.
